Outlook 2013 - Empty Inbox in 'My Outlook Data File'?

Is there meant to be emails in the Outlook data file inbox? Mine is empty and I am not sure whether that is right...

What is the purpose of the data file folders?

They'll be there if someone sends you an email.

When I receive emails they don't appear in it - they just appear in the email address inbox.
