why must i click on Outlook Update Folders to receive emails

Most likely a configuration setting.

In Outlook go to Send/Receive > Send/Receive Groups > Define Send/Recieve Groups.

Check the configuration settings.

Likely to be "correct" but not necessarily in line with your requirements.

You may want more frequent automatic send/receives if you prefer to receive emails steadily versus some big delivery every 30 minutes (default).

Your system may be using an even longer time span. So no mail until you manually initiate the transfers.

I have already changed the delivery to 3 minutes.

Did the setting remain at 3 minutes?

In Send/Receive Groups under Group Names select All Accounts and click Edit.

Check the Account Options and Folder Options.

Settings remained at 3 minutes and all items under edit seem correct.

Who is your ISP?

Check their website and look for any required configuration settings with respect to receiving and sending email.

I have Xfinity (aka Comcast) and have had to adjust my Outlook configuration a couple of times based on what they decided to do.

I use email via Office 365.

Your Outlook 2019 via your ISP may have a different configuration setting....

Thank you. I have resolved the issue by adding "Inbox" to the root folder path.
