Question Over volted wd easy store chucked drive issue 006-0B40385 / 006-0B40385

006-0B40385 (on the back) and 006-0B40385

yesterday night I accidentally plugged in a 19 volt Laptop adapter into my wd easy store and then it stopped working, I did not see any magi smoke !! I was able to shuck the drive and found that the adapter board is working but the hdd motherboard is having an issue and the board is 006-0B40385 (on the back) and 006-0B40385 (on the front)

None of what you damaged with the over voltage is user repairable. Replace that drive.

Remove Z4 (12V TVS diode) and flow a blob of solder over the tiny fuse below and to the left of Z4.

Retest for shorts at the pads of Z4. If the short has gone away, then you would normally be good to go.

And whether this "fix" works or not, take this as a head slap to start a good backup routine.

worst thing is that this is the backup disk in the Truenas ! i havent gone 321 just 21 !! 2 devices at two places.

well fuses are for the weak 😉 but jokes apart yes sir. if this works will buy the parts and will solder them accordingly !

Yes, of course, but how many users would be able to replace a 4A smt fuse, or even procure one, especially those who have never soldered before? The answer is very, very, few. I've seen the results of DIY attempts, and this approach is the one with least risk for the complete novice, especially if the short is cleared after removing the diode. In fact, I explain the risks in my FAQ.

In that thread I go through the whole PCB, testing the voltages and load resistances at each of the onboard power supplies. The fact that the OP is still unsure suggests to me that a more basic approach is required.

So the data still exists in its entirety?

If so, just replace these drives!
