Mainly what I'm looking for in terms of feedback are ways to get similar performance while maintaining or detracting from the cost. I can spend about $1,200-1,300 maximum with taxes included and rebates excluded(I have terrible luck with them). This doesn't mean I want to spend that. I want to spend as little as possible while getting the most out of the tower. Ideally I'd want it to be my tower without needing upgrades for about two years, when I'll sell it and rebuild for the next product cycle.

Things I'd like to see maybe would be a change of motherboard. I've heard some negative things about the z97-A in terms of overclocking. But also if there's something just as good at a lesser price I'm open. I'll be using a single R9-290X, but there's always the option of throwing another in in a couple months as prices drop. So 8x/8x minimum is a must. Other bells and whistles I'm not caring about too much, like USB 3.1 etc.

I've been debating the X99 platform for some time but haven't convinced myself of the price yet. I mean I could put a build together in partpicker for roughly the same price point, minus the SSD. But it's hard to squeeze adequate liquid cooling into the X99 build for my price point. Basic 212 coolers and low end liquid coolers won't be enough to overclock a 5820K which would concern me highly due to the chip's already nerfed nominal clock speed.

Case I need something that's going to provide ample expansion room, should I opt for it. Needs good airflow as well. I'm coming from a HAF-X so my expectations are high. Suggestions that bring the price down are welcome. There's few cases I hate the look of, so feel free.

RAM I absolutely need 16GB and 1600MHZ cas 8 or faster. I'm always foggy on what's actually faster. But I'd imagine 1600mhz cas 8 would be slightly faster than 2400mhz cas 11? I've always heard latency is all important.

Worst case scenario I could use my old 8.1 CD to install windows, unactivated for a week or two until I could afford to buy a new key. That's not preferred obviously as I'd have to pay like 119.99 via the microsoft store as opposed to like $80 OEM. But if it saves money in the meantime

OKAY! Suggestions please! A Z97 tweak/suggestion and an X99 suggestion would be excellent! My purposes range from mild to moderate gaming and lots of rendering & file compressing. Although you're not picking me a GPU(I have one already) I play at 3840x1080.

Thanks!

Your build seems really fine. I would change to a gaming 5 mobo or a gaming 7 at most

2400 at CAS 12 would be equivalent to 1600 at 8 so 2400 at 11 should be slightly better. Either way you get the throughput of the rating.

You don't really need to overclock the i7-4790k, already pretty close to the top of its range. I see most people stop at 4.6Ghz or so, so only a gain of 200Mhz. If you really want to push it though nothing wrong with the cooler.

Not heard any complaints about overclocking on the Z97-A, but if you aren't willing to spend much more then that I doubt you would see a difference of more then a single multiplier.

Kingston made two versions of that SSD. The early ones had much faster flash memory. Later ones are quite low end. I would suggest a Kingston HyperX, Crucial MX or BX, Samsung Evo or Pro. Or head on over to M.2 territory for some fast speeds.

You could conceivably spend half as much on a power supply. Though nothing wrong with that one.
