Question on overclocking a 4k monitor:

My brother was super generous and gifted me a Acer Predator XB281HK 28in 4k monitor as an early Christmas present as he knew I wanted to get a 4k monitor. Unfortunately, it's a 60hz default monitor. I'm building a new gaming rig (specs below) to work with this monitor.

I'd like to overclock the monitor to the highest stable hz. 1. Any guidance on being able to do that? 2. Can I overclock at a lower resolution (1440 or 1080) and get a higher hz? 3. Is it even possible to overclock at 4k?

Thanks so much!

My upcoming rig:

z370-E STRIX
i7 8700k
Nvidia 1080ti
32GB RAM @ 3200
Acer XB281HK

No. Doesn't know what's he's talking about.

Max refresh is still going to be 60Hz but when it drops lower than 60 frames, at least it'll be smooth...

Thanks for responses so far. I'm probably just not going to bother with trying to overclock that 4k monitor. It doesn't seem to make much sense. Considering I'll only have one monitor, I think I"m going to set-up a dual monitor situation where I'll get a 1440p 144hz for gaming and the 2nd monitor will be for youtube, a movie, or whatever.

Problem is that it will probably be annoying if I get a 27" 1440p 144hz monitor and I have a slightly bigger 4k monitor.

g-sync will not make your monitor faster. it will help reduce tearing. So when your video card is not cable of keeping up with the current graphics settings (and FPS drops below 60) the monitor (together with your 1080ti) will drop the monitor's refresh rate to match it. You should also enable fast-sync to keep your fps from going over 60fps.

g-sync will not make your monitor go over 60hz. Nothing will. Look at the cheap 1440p/144hz monitor I mentioned if you want fast 1440p.

I'll look into the Dell monitor you mentioned. It doesn't look like it's IPS, but rather LN; I may opt for something more expensive to get in the IPS market.

It is a TN panel. For a TN it is decent, but nothing like one of the better VA or IPS models. If you want what I consider to be the best.

Costs 850. 1440p/144hz/VA/32"
