Overclock causing hang at "Starting Windows"?

I got a new PC a few months back and have had it running "stable" at 4.5 ghz @ 1.3v for a while now. 1 out of 10 times it would freeze at the "starting windows" logo, but today it froze 5 times in a row, could not get to the desktop.

Could an overclock cause this issue? Anyone have any recommendation on what I should do? (i am a bit of an OC novice)

My temps during the time were 31 c idle and low 70's at 100% load aida 64.

Thanks

Yes it is an OC issue. Something on the MB is not quite right... I cannot get mine stable over 4.4 and even at that, it will hang under a heavy load. All hardware is different, even the "Same Board as..." Manufacturing practices have tolerances, often not supper tight. Step it back to 4.4 and go w/ it.

Sorry, posted at work in a rush. The system is as follows,

5820k
asus x99 deluxe
corsair h110i gtx (280 rad)

Am I causing damage to the hardware if it will not pass the loading screen and I power off or if I am blue screening? Or is this simply a part of the OC process?

Well, I just hung at the same Starting Windows... screen 3x in a row @ 4.4 with 1.3 then tried 4.3 ghz with 1.3v

Finally was able to boot at 4.2 @ 1.3v

Tradesman1, Here is a screenshot I took of the ASUS Program as well as CPU-Z.

Hopefully in there is the information you are asking for, I believe it is.

Thanks for the continued assistance.

I think it is fine, I know I am not Tradesman1, but it looks fine, run Prime95 for a while and see to be sure.

No worries, all help is appreciated.

Anyone have any insight as to why I was able to run 4.5 @ 1.3v for many months through rigorous gaming sessions (6+ hours) and video editing sessions (2+ hours), now all of the sudden I have to dial back from 4.5 all the way to 4.2?

I mean, I know I was getting hangs on Starting Windows maybe 1 in 15 or 1 in 20 times with the 4.5, but now all the sudden I can't boot unless 4.2? Fairly upsetting.

Hello... Heat is directly related to the Lifetime and performance of a Electronic device... they Don't overrate the components used, like they did in the Old days... B )
You could be running one of your components or Data paths too far... Is your PCIe lane OC'd?
Do you have a very fast HD/SSD/OS boot time set in your BIO's?... reduce that, to see if it's a communication/HD fault.

Like I said memory, MB parts, are not as Robust to OC... But every things works off of Clock cycles... and when you start OC'ng you can create more Data timing/communication errors between devices, and is not heat related or the components faults... But will make Windows Blue screen.
Like they say "Timing... is Everything" in the Digital world this is so true.

I don't believe I set anything to OC besides the CPU, nor have I adjusted the boot times, I think it might be set to "quick boot" but that's all. I have a Samsung 850 Pro SSD

Hello... What is the performance level of the MB set at? I recommend setting to standard if you want to OC... this can reduced Timing error's... and Bad pre-programed OC/device/data lane settings.

Just because you have "CL what ever" memory... it might communicate better with your MB when set one step higher because of the CPU memory data clock timing you have changed, or the PCIe data clock.... there are so many setting for memory, it takes a lot of testing and a long time to understand them all... Find/Get your 1T memory settings... I have found it to be a sweet spot for memory performance... more important than the FREQ setting... this is a sign your memory data path is Sync'd.

Okay, I will try that, is this for 4.5 still or 4.4 or 4.3?

And I believe I am doing the OC through the BIOS. I am not using the software, I simply used it to show the screenshot.
I have been entering BIOS by spamming DEL on start up and then entering the OC info through there. This seems right, yes?

I tried letting the "ASUS Ai Suite" do it's "optimization" and it put me to 4.1 with 1.25v. I tried starting my computer today and it hung at the Starting Windows screen again. Hung 2x more times in a row, then I upped voltage to 1.3 and it got to desktop at 4.1. Starting to think something is wrong...

You are almost always better off doing a manual overclock and not using automatic OC stuff.. Nothing is wrong, all cpu's are different so some need more voltage than others and hit a clock wall at different speeds than others.. You just have to systematically test and see what your cpu can do. Overclocking is not guaranteed it is a bonus.

Do you think I should uninstall the AI Suite 3? or it is required? I believe my fans are controlled by Corsair Link because when I change fan modes in ai suite 3 nothing happens, and I don't think it does much else. I have a feeling the program might be "fighting" with the BIOS for the settings or something.. not sure.

AI Suite 3 is not required at all. Some people might use it to only monitor temps, fan speeds, voltages. ect. You can always uninstall it and if you want it back reinstall it. However it shouldn't be changing the settings unless you have it set to load the settings when windows starts. Here is a guide to overclocking your motherboard..
