I got a new PC a few months back and have had it running "stable" at 4.5 ghz @ 1.3v for a while now. 1 out of 10 times it would freeze at the "starting windows" logo, but today it froze 5 times in a row, could not get to the desktop.

Could an overclock cause this issue? Anyone have any recommendation on what I should do? (i am a bit of an OC novice)

My temps during the time were 31 c idle and low 70's at 100% load aida 64.

Thanks

Thanks guys. As I was not the one who initially set up the BIOS etc, do you believe I should do the following...? Uninstall AI Suite 3, then "load defaults" in BIOS, and then attempt to OC from that point? If I load defaults in BIOS will it mess up my boot order? I believe now its set to my SSD then 4tb drive, then external drive.

Will loading the default BIOS cause me any other issues? With my low experience I don't want to be locked out of my PC lost with "settings" that have to be fixed or what not.

Hello... Load MB defaults is a great place to start... You will be able to change boot order and enter the BIO's screen after a reset... Typically if your BOOT drive is in SATA0 you will be fine.
Disabling or removing ai suite will give you manual OC control.

It is indeed a "Brave new world"... proceed with care and like a dedicated scientist... trial and error... record/compare data... but a MB default/reset will get you out of trouble fast... back to step 1 of your process... newer MB's will default back to earlier GOOD/Dual Bio's setting too, if it fails to Boot... so check for that.

Update:

I am afraid to set bios to default so I browsed around a bit more and changed some settings. I turned Intel Speedstep off and Intel Turbo Boost off. I also disabled XMP as my RAM is 2133. I then set my OC to 4.4 with 1.3v. I was able to load into Windows and did an Aida64 stress test for 11 minutes. Here's the statistics from that test..

Any advice on where to go from here? Were those changes I made for the better?

Thanks again all.

Looks good to me, 11min is a very short stability test.. The only thing I might change is to save power Speed Step should be enabled to allow the cpu to slow down when not under load, for absolute max overclocks disabling it is helpful but for normal overclocks it can be enabled..

Also to note, on the front page I changed a setting from "Asus Optimal" to Normal. The options there were Asus Optimal, Normal, and Power Saving.
Thanks, I will turn speed step back on.

When I first got the PC I did a 1 hour Aida64 test and passed without going over 75c. But then all of the sudden last week I started getting the freeze at the windows splash screen. That's what I mainly don't understand is why that started occurring all of the sudden.

So, at 4.4 @ 1.3 and not going over 70c too much, do you think I have room to push as I haven't yet touched system agent voltage either?

With some afterthought, another question I have is what is so demanding about the windows splash screen versus lets say 4k rendering or a 1 hour aida64 stress test. Why was I able to render in 4k at 4.5ghz/pass aida64, but the windows splash screen won't load?

You were able to render 4k because you have a fantastic CPU, you weren't able to get passed the splash screen because of a bad overclock. I don't know why you would even need to overclock an i7-5820k.

I have a feeling to get much more out of your cpu you would need to use better cooling and higher voltages. 4.4Ghz with 6 cores is quite good.. There are many many factors why the system won't run at 4.5GHZ 1.3v anymore like dust, ambient temps, power delivery changes, and a whole list more.. It probably was not really 100% stable to begin with if I had to guess.
