Overclocking a Pentium D 945 cpu. Bad idea?

Hey, I'm looking to slightly overclock my PD 945 cpu. I know it's an old processor but I just wanted to try it out. I've never done any kind of overclocking before and I know I could really screw up my computer. I don't have any special heatsink on mine, just standard.


Here is my system spec

Pentium D 945 cpux2 at 3.4ghz
4 DDR2 Gigs, Samsung (2GB) and G Skill (2GB) Ram at 266MHz
Intel i945P/PL/G/GZ mobo
ATI Radeon 5670 512MB
Seagate 400GIG HD


So, would it be stupid to mess around and try to slightly overclock this cpu?

You can try. I think the 945 runs hot enough that it is not a good idea without better CPU cooling.

And while Intel motherboards tend to be very stable motherboards, most are not good overclockers.

Go for it. Just make sure you have a good cooler, or at least take off the side panel on your PC so it can get more air. The old Netburst CPUs run hot and there's a good reason they didn't sell them much faster than 3.6GHz. Even the single cores were like 3.8 and 3.733 for the EE edition and those would still overheat and throttle with the stock cooler.

I think overclocking is not a threat, if u know about it and also have good cooling. but i doubt that your motherboard supports serious overclocking or even a little.but u can always go to the bios and check things out. just roam around in your bios.

Pentium D's are hot to begin with; make sure you have adequate cooling before even atempting to OC a Pentium D.

i had i think a PD 925 or something, it was the 3.0 ghz one anyway.

i had it stable at 3.8 for about 8 months before upgrading to my i7. you need to upgrade anyway, PD are old hat now , at least get a core 2

first go to google and type cpuz in the search and download this software. then from there u will know the model of the motherboard. once u get that then u can searchfor its compatibility easily. hope i helped

I have the same cpu a corsair h60 which a friend gifted me and my motherboard's chipset is 945gz but I still don't know how to overclock that cpu
