I have been playing around with AMD Overdrive to overclock my fx 8350. I have watched tones of videos and read forums. My multiplier is set at 22 at 1.3975 volts giving me speeds up to 4.4Ghz. Everything seems to be working fine when I run a stability test my cpu is wroking at 4390 Hz but as soon as the test is finished it drop down to 1.3Ghz. My question is, is something wrong or is this simply because there is no games or apps running to keep the CPU running fast. Im sort of new at this and would appreciate any help from someone who has overclocked this CPU before.

Solution
Yes it's called cpu throttling and it's caused by your motherboard. Most AM3+ motherboards are actually not good enough to run a FX8350.
AMD ASrock 970 Extreme3 R2.0

Edit: It seems that they should be fine together maybe an upgrade on MOBO is the near future.

Is my only problem with the overclocking is the cpu throttling?

It was thanks for the help

Have you disabled your c states (lower power states) and cool & quiet? if not then freq jumping around under lower loads is normal. To me your only throttling if it is jumping around under full load. Also what is your thermal margin. if it is hitting 0 or negative numbers then you def throttling. I overclocked with c states normal/ cool and quiet enabled. I have run about every test program while doing it on my 8350 and while under 100% load it will not drop at all from max freq. but as soon as it stops it will jump around (yes even down to 1.4ghz) its just because I allow my CPU to use lower power states when needed.

as a suggestion your overclocking you really need to read this on temps if you haven't. http://www.tomshardware.com/faq/id-2122665/understanding-temperature-amd-cpus-apus.html

Yeah the ASrock 970 Extreme3 R2.0 should at least run your FX8350 at stock clocks. I would not try to overclock on it. You could help yourself out by adding a fan that blows down on the motherboard. The stock cooler is actually better than the tower coolers like the CM 212.

I have had it overclocked to 4.4 Ghz for the last few days but I just got blue screened so I might just take your advice on that.
