Hi,

So I am fairly new to overclocking my GTX 970, but I am wondering what the best settings are to overclock it on Afterburner... I'm a bit worried about doing this, because last time I tried it, It completely failed, and the game I was playing gave me a Windows Error and a solid 1 fps...

I'm currently getting 60fps~ on most games at the moment, but I really want to try and push another 5fps atleast...

Any help is appreciated,
Thanks!

Open up msi afterburner and click "Reset" button it will reset all the changes just in case. Nvidia maxwell are very good cards to overclock and now a days it's very easy to slightly overclock your gpu (~150) without even touching any voltage settings. Here's what you need to do in order to overclock.

Please keep in mind that every single GPU is unique in it's material so may be your card is more overclockable than other in market may be it is not so you need to find your own comfort point and settings where you're satisfied with your card. I wouldn't recommend you to touch any voltage settings at this stage. Ok let's get to the business.

1)Open up MSI After burner.
2)Increase power limit slider to all the way up.
3)increase temp target to all the way up.
4)For Core clock i would recommend +50 mhz increase and +50 in memory clock offset.
5)Click apply and then download Some benchmarking software i.e Unigen heaven and valley and rn for atleast 1 hour and check if there's any lines dots on the screen or flickering etc etc. If something weird happens or any crashes then go and decrease your clock slightly (-5-10mhz) and again test. if everything is fine go and increase again slightly and repeat this until you get your sweet point where your card runs well without freezing/crashing.

Hope this will help you.

Hi! I have done everything as you have said, and I have booted up Just Cause 3 to test it out, however, there is no difference in frame rate.. I have made sure to click apply and set the power limit and temp to the highest it can be... yet still nothing. I set my core clock to +100mhz offset and +100mhz for memory aswell..

Any idea why it might not be working? Thanks

You can tell the difference is benchmarks, try Heaven for ex. You should be doing it anyways to test for stability. OC does not magically make your card work like a 980ti. It just bumps the performance a bit. From a top line 970 you can expect 1500+ core and ~ 8000k memory clock, although most do not oc that high.

Overclocking doesn't ensure that you'll get extra fps in every single game. It varies, in some games you might get ~5 fps increase but it depends upon lot of things, maybe you get your game running more stable than it was before. If you want to test that whether you've gained or not you can run unigen heaven or valley or any other graphics benchmark software i.e 3D Mark 11 and compare results before and after overclocking. Briefly, yes you'll get increase but not dramatically.

happy overclocking :)

Sweet! Thanks :)
