So i am running an i5 4690k with a hyper 212 evo, and an msi gaming 5 mobo. I tried overclocknig with no turbo boost or OC genie, from 3.5 ghz to 4.0, but then when i boot it says bad reboot or whatever and tells me to load from last good known boot. Also, it says the voltage is set to auto, which it is, surely that cannot be the problem...

please help quick :) thanks

Now you have to clear your CMOS to reset all settings from factory. And start overclocking from factory settings. DON'T OVERCLOCK BY ANY SOFTWARE, SOFTWARE CANNOT BE PROGRAMED TO PERFECT OVERCLOCKING!!!!
I will recommend to do overclocking in bios because it needs less voltage, higher oc and if also increase the processor life comparable to oc by software. Also If you get Any manual settings and of you go for that then the oc will be unstable and will produce more heat. If you give less voltage then you will get unstable oc and if you give higher voltage then it will produce more heat and will reduce CPUs life. So it is important to find a sweet point of correct combination of frequency and voltage. To do that Just follow this...
Hey buddy. Are you overclocking in the bios? DO NOT EVER OVERCLOCK your cpu with software. USE THE BIOS TO OVERCLOCK. Cpu software provides instability and multiple problems.

Anyways use your bios. These motherboards are made with overclocking software. Makes no sense not to you use it.

ok, sorry sincreator for the spam, but I am really quite worried. Anyways, I will have a look for the latest bios but I am having a lot of problems. As for using the bios, yes, I have tried the bios and the intel extreme tuning utility. You don't need to download drivers for the cpu do you?

Also, another problem I have is that windows just doesn't load now, so now ijust tried to start my PC up and I need to repair windows. Why is this happening?

If you give less voltage then you will get unstable oc and if you give higher voltage then it will produce more heat and will reduce CPUs life. So it is important to find a sweet point of correct combination of frequency and voltage. To do that Just follow this Steps:
1) just enable your XMP memory profile if your memory support that.
2) increase the cpu ratio from factory settings a little(whichever smallest possible) and boot in your os.
3) Download cpu stress testing software prime95 and do a stress test around 20 minutes.
4) if it passes then restart and go in bios, increase a little cpu ratio again a little bit.
5) if it passes then repeat 4th method. And if it not passes then go in bios and increase the CPU voltage and again test. Just keep doing that.
6) a time will arrive when the temp will gone so high, at that time you have to stop and keep it to cool.
7) also when doing upper methods you have to keep a eye on your temps.
8) a step will arrive when prime95 will never pass or the temp will gone so high immediately when stress test started, that point you have to stop and you get the unleashed speed of your processor. You got a stable oc now. Watch temps and don't let them go above 80.
Also see the guide that I given below, it will tell you the basics.
Best luck. :)

Solution
ok thanks a lot, will try later. Just one point. Why does my hard drive keep going to max (100%) whenever i try and play a game. It lags my game out. I have tried partitioning it and that worked for about 5 seconds...

I have a WD blue 1tb. Like i go into a game and it lags out, so i close the game and then partition the HDD and then try and go into the game again, and now that won't even load. This PC isn't doing very well.

also, when you say CMOS settings what are they exactly? not memory I gather

First about your hard drive.
Is it happening wwith particular hard drive?
Install any game in your USB and try to run in USB. Try to change the SATA port that you have connected your Hard drive. Try other hard drive. Bring any hard drive from your friend and see whether the problem happens again. If the problem doesn't happen with another hard drive then you have some problems in your WD caviar blue 1TB. Now copy game in USB and run it and tell me what happens. Which port and USB drive you have? I mean usb 3.0 or 2.0?

Now about clearing CMOS:
Clearing CMOS means to reset all bios settings to factory. It is useful when we apply some wrong settings in bios or any software, as you have done when you aye OCing your cpu. I think the hard drive problem also arises because of that. First clear CMOS. I will tell you how to do that. Just tell me your mobo. Which mobo are you using?

ok, right I will try the drive later, I booted it up again now and it didn't happen, so I will see what happens. I am doing your steps now :)

by the way I am using an MSI gaming 5

You can see the battery near the third the PCIe x16 slot. To clear the CMOS you have to remove the battery. wait for 15-20 minutes and put that battery again in the right orientation as it before(check the + and - poles) and you have reseted all settings to factory and now you can start overclocking from factory settings. Any further question, ask freely.
