Hi all,

This is my first time overclocking and I'm trying to understand the basics, so forgive my ignorance. It's a pretty old build which I recently upgraded to re-use it.

System specs :

  • Q9550 w/ CoolerMaster Hyper212 EVO
    ASUS P5Q Pro Turbo
    8GB DDR2 RAM OCZ2V8002G and OCZ2G8004GK, mixed 2 different types... old build :(
    EVGA 750 GQ
    Samsung SSD 850EVO 250gb
    ATI Radeon HD4870 1gb
Currently at BIOS I have :
CPU Ratio Setting : AUTO
FSB Frequency : 333

Stock settings :

I tried playing around and could only do CPU Ratio Setting = 8.5 and FSB Frequency = 350 at AUTO voltage.
Anything other and the PC wouldn't start. I must be doing something wrong, unless my cheap RAM is limiting me?

Any clues/tips would be appreciated!

Hi there, I once had a similar system that unfortunately is now dead. Since we are talking here about old-aged parts, you should know that there is some chance that an overclocking effort may kill your board or CPU, especially the board since CPUs are more robust, unless you over-volt them a lot. Now if you want to continue with this effort here are the links that a used 3-4 years ago.

Finally you should know that mixing 2 different memory modules doesn't help with overclocking.
