I have been working with my xfx r9 280 in its overclocking in the past few moths and I have been rather surprised since its overclocking is quite potent (almost 1110 on the core) i jumped on here too see if anyone else has any overclocking ideas that they would like for me to try out since ive ran out of ideas on what to do to this beast just leave your settings ect core voltage, core clock, memory clock, and any other notes i should be aware about when trying out your overclock thanks! With Overvolting, on the r9 280 (which is a 7950 basically) I would go to the max of 1.25v or if you can go up to 1.3v. Although depending on your card it may be voltage locked to not go that high.

Usually a good overclocking r9 280 will reach around about 1180mhz (nearly 1200mhz) with 1.25v. As long as temps are fine it's all good.

Just download MSI AB, ramp up power limit to 20%, core voltage to 1.250v and start overclocking. You'll need 1100/1500 to reach 280X stock performance. This is one of my 280's (new bios - edited with VBE7 and overclocked) Around 7500 in firestrike :
