Hello!

So this has been a problem ive had for a while, but seems to be getting worse.

My Graphics Catd is an Evga nVidia geForce 8800

The reason I suspect my card is because I can browse and work and do everything on my computer fine, but as soon as I launch a game with medium to high graphics my computer just completely turns off after 5 to 10 minutes. The exhaust of everything is cool except for the graphics card, which is hot, but still touchable.

My temporary solution is to put a fan up agains my computer to keep it cool enough to play higher graphic games like titanfall or Payday 2 on the barebones settings. However, i want to run my games the best I can!

Everything has smooth frames and looks fine on the highest settings for the time i can run it, so my computer CAN run it, but I think it just cant keep cool! (The card has a built in fan)

Not sure which 8800 you have specifically, but most of those are 512mb so that's a really low speed compared to what most games demand today. Depending on what monitor and resolution you're playing at, it could simply be way too much for it to handle.

Short of buying a new graphics card, the only solutions I could think of would be to use some compressed air to spray your graphics card and make sure there's not a lot of dust clogging it, or buying another case fan or cooler for inside the case.

I know for Titanfall, 512mb was the absolute lowest possible system requirement, so it probably would be running really hot if your 8800 is the 512mb version.

Hello.

Are the fans on the graphics card actually spinning? And is it dusty?

Any advice on good resources to understand speedfan? I got it myself recently but am very confused, and could only figure out how to control one of my chassis fans, hah.

This might help the OP too if he gets speedfan.

Thanks!

Only some configs can support SpeedFan's fan controlling. But it's worth a shot.

I have cleaned the fan multiple times, but it seems it spins a little slower than it should. Ill definately try the speedfan software suggested. Thanks for the idea! I'll get back to you all on how it goes.

Update:

I tried speed fan and found that the card is running at 60C! Unfortunately, the fan is not compatible with the program. The current case I have has no built in fans, only vents for air to get through. What good cases are there that you'd suggest?

First off an overheating graphics card will not shut down your computer also your card is Stated by Nvidia to have a max temp of 105C. To me it sounds like your Power Supply or possibly your CPU What kind of CPU and power supply do you have. Also check your CPU temp while playing these games for me please 😀 a good program for that is CPU-Z HWmonitor
