I have a GeForce® GTX 1080 Xtreme Gaming WATERFORCE 8G. Its maybe a year and a half to two years old. I have never had a problem until 2 days ago when I realized that my frames dropped over half when playing Cat Mechanic Simulator 2018. I installed MSI Afterburner to see what the problem was and realized that my GPU would reach temperatures of 92°C and, as the GPU should, GPU clock would not go above 345MHz. This is a water cooled GPU and has never failed to remain below 70°C until now. Why the sudden change.

So far I have tried other games (SC2, The Hunter, Moster Hunter World) with the same problem.
Dropped graphic settings
I kinda refuse to under clock my GPU.

What could this be?

Then use DDU and wipe out the Drivers entirely and install the lates version ones again... and also check whether windows is up to date as well.
I can't recommend to do a benchmark on the GPU.. 92C... that not a good temp to do such thing anyway.
But It might not be a technical fault because the card still working.
Anyway how about the warranty?
