What Tweebel (sp?) said, but...

At stock speed with air cooling;
A64 temps below 50c under load is ok. Some will run even cooler - see below.
P4E temps below 60c under load is ok. Newer steppings are rumored to be cooler - say 55c or less.

These are very 'general' numbers however. Cooler is always better and its possible to get them even lower with good cooling and case airflow, and, as Tweebel said, different models and different clock speeds have different effects (i.e. an A64 3200+ Newcastle core will run warmer than an A64 3200+ Winchester core, all other things being equal).

Without very good case cooling, a P4E will have trouble keeping cool, as it does run very hot. If you don't take proper care to have good airflow, it will be a problem. If you have good airflow, it will not be a problem. The A64 doesn't produce as much heat, so it's not as critically important to have excellent airflow.

Mike.

Another important factor can be the bios interpretation of the sensor. A lot of the nforce boards are reporting the A64s incorrectly. The early MSI boards, and the Abit K8N are classic examples. I have heard of A64s being reported at above 85c, but running prime95 without a hitch. That says pretty clearly, that the bios is not reading the temps properly.
The same can be said for the P4Es, though in reverse. A number of boards will report the temps in the mid 60s, even when the chip is throttled. The P4Es dont throttle till 75c, so clearly, the bios is not reading the sensor correctly.

Im a 3.4 owner. Its Hotter than he.. on air. It does very well with liquid however. It will OC really high.
Dont get this CPU unless you are going to buy one of the very few mobos that will allow you to unlock the multipliier. The ASUS P5AD2-E Premium is a very good choice for$230.00 AS someone else stated, the mobo will have alot to do with the heat as well,

I am afraid not. That would be too much of a burden. Trying to get an A64 to run that hot, and yet that slow, would be, let me assure you, a total imposability.
I'm afraid that you will have to settle for much faster, and much cooler.

The s939 chips use about 50-60 watts. The tbred b uses 60-70 watts. The stock cooler for the A64s is much better than any xp cooler.
Yes, the A64s heat a lot less than any xp. But Amd didn't stop there. They tossed in cool and quiet, to make things even more drastic.

Lets look at the positive side of this argument. At least now there is no doubt that you should never take this friends advise on any matter :lol:

There was a time, when this was true. About the same time monkeys still talked, and posted under names like AmdMeltDown :) Tell your friend to catch up with reality though, MMX isn't hot anymore, and neither are AMD chips.
