I understand the not being able to participate thing as I certainly don't have the overclocker know-how to compete. But they do contests fairly often, and this has been the first in awhile I've seen that has had any real requirements. Plus, the results will be interesting, and there wont be a thousand pity-me-more-than-the-other-guy-so-I-can-get-free-$#!T comments to read through for them. Also, theChief73 & otacon72: It's not them limiting anything, I doubt Toms can call up Intel and demand $5000+ worth of hardware for a free giveaway all the time. This way Toms gets to give its readers, especially the crazy-overclocking variety, good information about overclocking capabilities and free expensive goodies. (What could be better than expensive goodies?) While Intel gets free stress-testing of its product for bragging rights, some nice PR, and some income from people melting their cpus and buying new ones. Sounds like a win for everyone but the cpu-melters. So kudos to Toms for giving away awesome hardware in a creative manner and double kudos for doing it so often.

You know what would be way cooler then this ?, The same contest but with any cpu you would like to use! The winner would be the one that gets the biggest OC percentage relative to the original core speed.

[citation][nom]someguynamedmatt[/nom]*sigh*How about one for AMD Phenom II Black Edition Owners? /off topic self pity[/citation]
Same except mine is a X3 Rana 440 unlocked 4th core. Maybe we will get in on the next giveaway.

rule.

:| .. guru3d did something "global" a while back.

[EDIT] I am sorry mrtoan if I interpreted your post incorrectly, no hard feelings, I must have had a rough day.

I am not asking for anyones pitty or begging for free $#!T as you put it. I was just stating the fact of the matter is that these contestants already have some really cool new hardware on thier hands, so why not make a contest a little more inclusive.

And Thank You Cangelini(Chris) for the heads up on the SBC! I will put my name in the hat and cross my fingers 🙂 and again I Thank You and everyone @ Tom's for the great job and generosity twards your readers.

And further more I commended Intel for their kindness and generosity that comes with such a give-a-way.

With the "begging for free stuff" comment, I think he was referring to the "smart and witty commenter" contest in which a lot of people begged for it without trying to be funny (though there were plenty of funny comments too and I thought the contest was awesome overall). I don't think he was saying that you were begging.

"If you’re fourth through 24th (the next 20 highest entrants)"

Tsk, tsk... Mr. Angelini, I know you're better than that to make a mild typo like this. 😛 4th through 24th places are a total of 21 places, as first through third only, well, account for three. So you might want to correct that error, since it's regarding a contest.

Still, brilliant idea for a constest; even if they don't have such spectacularly impressive prizes, you guys should do this sort of thing more often. I don't own one of these CPUs myself, but it'll be interesting to see what the best results we get will be.

I don't understand the reasoning behind this contest. If you can prove that you have the most kick-ass system, we'll give you another one? Why don't you give the goods to the poor souls who don't have a kick-ass system already?

A great marketing gimmick! Encourage people to compete in getting the highest OC, that would improve the image of the "potential" of Intel, & award prizes to make them do anything to kill their chip. They'll get to sell so many replacements for dead CPU's & get great exposure as the winner has achieved something so many others have killed their CPU's in trying to achieve! ;-)

Insane overclocking is like dragracing, run a short strip. No stability at all, as long as it runs its race its alright.

What use is it for the normal geek? Whats really impressive is a good overclock thats stable 24/7 att 100% load and dont need you to stay up 24/7 to pour in L2N until the rig dies of condensation to gain that extra 1-1.5 ghtz.

Please make a "normal" overclock competetion, sure harder to verify a 24/7 stable overclock for say a week at 100 pct load than a peak performance for 2-3 mins post a score and see the screen go black

@ cangelini: I know you've been updating us on the 6000 series progress but tbh most your info's one-two weeks old before you guys get it to press(I have ati+radeon+6000+series+southern+islands bookmarks for google and I look for new info everyday)

Although there was a quick series of leaks involving the supposed 6870/6770/6xxx card's the info's now become a bit stagnate. WE WANT INFO's, and if according to speculation there due to be announced/released next month it should'nt be too hard to get.

~if you find any info that you'd like to share to a fan buy have a nda agreement with one of the companies such as amd/ati or there partners you could always send a anonymous email to my listed one

would be appreciated 😉

P.S can you please ask AMD/ATi if a unified architecture is in the pipeline??? I'd love a UA like nvidias for all its GPU's

I attend every major LAN event in the U.S. which works out to around ten a year. To those of you who are complaining that the people who will win this contest already have access to tons of hardware and $$ you have no idea what you are talking about.

The people who will win this contest are more than ordinary folks, who usually work for less than ordinary pay. The difference is they have a passion they follow, and make huge sacrifices so they are able to work their art. The same goes for many of the top case modders who achieve sponsorship/win at various events. Yes, there are some privileged folks, as there are in all walks of life, but the majority have to forgo many every-day luxurys people take for granted...like skipping lunch, turning off their air conditioners, and saving every dime.

I am very lucky to know several of these people and share in their passion, and at the end of the day, even if they win said thousands of dollars in prizes, it will not even make up the cost it took them to get there.

Please show empathy; there are contests for everyone out there. Instead of complaining put your time to good use and learn a skill and develop a passion.
