I have a P4 3ghz,512 ram,Radeon 9800 pro,18 inch flat panel screen....the ideal system for gaming & pretty much everything else I can think of!
I have just enabled hyperthreading on it and am not sure if this a good thing.
I read it can slow things down at times, which is what I totally dont want as I tend to mainly play 3d shooter games on it.
Any advice on what benefits hyperthreading actually bring or should I disable it?
Thanks.

Use it its not a huge increase in performance for software not specifically written for it. Plus on the desktop is where itll hum for you.

It can increase performance mostly when multitasking, THG covered the benifits a few months back.

let hyperthreading handle some of the running tasks in windows like virus scanners, etc.., iy will help a bit in gaming.

"18 inch flat panel screen"?
Is that those LCD flatscreens?
They are NOT ideal for gaming *S*
Quite the opposite...

HT won't do jack if you don't run XP, it might even be a problem. If ya do, enable it.
A very simplified analogy for HT is that it's like downloading 2 files one after the other and the same 2 files at the same time, the latter will take less time usualy...

Enable Hyperthreading it will help alot with multi-tasking(running multiple programs). If you look at benchmarks it helps moderately in some specific applications and the couple of times it hindered was really small.

Bottom Line is since you have that feature you should enable it, it can only help, the few instances it doesn't are minor. I use Hyperthreading and love it i can definitely notice the difference.

The only thing that i truly know...

is that i know nothing at all.

Well thanks for your comments guys,..seems to me I should keep hyperthreading enabled.
Anybody know of any upcoming games which will benefit from hyperthreading??..hopefully Doom 3..now that would be awesome...AI would be very challenging.
Cheers.

I doubt there'll be any game with a huge benefit from HT for a fair while. However, as someone said above, there will probably be a large advantage if you have a lot of background processes running, as one 'CPU' can run those, while the other runs your game.

Writing Multi-threaded Applications is extremely painful... No programmer's going to go there unless he needs to.
