no, its more like Intel themselves said the P4 is NOT their 7x86 processor a few months ago.
Its not a 6x86, and I suppose if you want to get picky it is the 7x86, but Intel corrected a few articles/interviews in which the P4 was referred to as the 7th generation processor.

well 7th generation is 7x86, just as the 386 was 3rd generation and so on..
some in the articel misquotedor became confused.

I can tell you teh reason INTEL does not use x86 terms or numbers is they have been held not patentable if they become generic term,
AMD used the argument to some success when they ripped of the 386 and 486 from INTEL and it went to court,
after 8 years INTEL learned theri lesson..
hence they came up with a name which has a TM sign,
and a patent so one cannot even mention the name in an ad..
that is why the employees are told Not to refer to it as
7x86..

What is up with that? So what if they are a "thorn"? They still make a good processor. If there are people out there that say AMD does not make a good processor, well you are not someone to listen to when it comes to computers! Both companies have purpose, AMD is trying to expand which is hurting Intel somewhat. It makes it better for all of us.

The official call is that the P4 is an "80886". This little detail came up when it was first noticed that a lot of Linux distros just wouldn't install on an "i886" architecture.
