i have a p4c800e deluxe (my 2nd one) with an 80gb pata system drive and a 250gb sata storage drive. i had an 80 gb sata drive for the system drive originally but thought it went bad so i replaced it w/ a pata drive. the mobo stopped recognizing the sata drive and caused it to make knocking sounds which usually happens with bad hdds. but then the 250 went bad shortly after so i tested both drives in another system and they work. there were a few bad sectors on the 80 but the knocking sound was gone so i'm guessing it could've been caused by the mobo. now the 2nd mobo is exhibiting the same problem. is this a known issue? or is it just my bad luck? i don't seem to have this problem with my p4p800.

My friend p4p800 was killing its drives, until he put a better PSU in his case... so I would check that too ..

Wow lamo, you bought the P4C800-E Deluxe not once, but twice? Sssssssssssssucker, those are lamo boards. All those good reviews...lies.

Well, it would be nice to say they're lies, but really the problem was the reviewers didn't use these boards long enough to expose their problems.

actually, this is a client's machine. he wanted the fastest, most expensive, intel, money-is-no-object system so i told him to get that board.

after my original post, i thought it may be the psu but all the otherdrives are working fine. i've swapped it out anyway and changed all the cables for the hdd and it seems to be ok. maybe i just needed to jiggle the cable. thanks for the responses

Are the drives Maxtor drives???

I had 2 Maxtor 80 gig SATA drives die (bad bootsector, really nice) in a row. After that I switched back to PATA, thinking the mainboard killed them. About 9 months later I decided to try SATA again with a 160 gig Samsung disk. Has worked without problems ever since, completely quiet and cool. The Maxtors were noisy and made clicky sounds (of course has nothing to do with sata). Maxtor especially seems to be good at delivering batches of bad drives. I've had 4 dead Maxtor drives so far, while an old (> 5 years) Seagate 2.5 gig still lives, just like 2 seagate 8.4 gig drives. Never had problems with Western Digital either. After I bought the Samsung 160 gigs I have however had 2 dead 80 gig Samsung in workplace pc's.. Bad batch too..

the 80 is a seagate and the 250 is a wd. personally, i never get maxtors. i used to go through a lot of them when i was building customs and they'd have the most problems. i used to swear by wd but they're loud as hell and i've been having problems w/ them lately so i've switched to seagate. uber quiet and so far, they're reliable.

Yes, I had a P3B-F, it was great! Asus started falling behind the competition around 2 years ago in one place or another, depending on the board, but this latest problem with the VRM's is just too much.
