I am haveing probs with system lockups. it seems to be
with the HD and acts like a temperature prob. I can do
a lot of web stuff like now and most other things that dont
require a lot of HD function. seagate sata 80g all bios
functions set to sata not raid. formated as fat32
3 partitions 1st 10g for xp pro 2nd 10g for all else
rest as drive E BUT.. soon as i start up doom 3 which
uses a lot of disc access - about 15 to 30 min and the
system locks. {this is not just doom. when i built the
system I had to take breaks just to get hd formating to
complete and loading xp}
when it locks the only way out is power off. power on in
less than 5 - 10 min and the system doesent even see the
hd. go have a smoke and cup coffee come back and it powers up like nothing was wrong.??? weird !
thought the ICH6R chip was way hot so i moved a fan that
hits it and the 925 heat sink - they seem to be runing
cooler to the touch (the cpu has a thermaltake cooler and
the system says the cpu is running at 113 and the mobo at
97 degrees. cpu-intel P4 3.0g )
i have emaild asus 2 times - no answer yet.
i have been on for over an hour now and all is good
but i know soon as i log into doom, now that the system
is warm, i may only get 5 to 10 min play time.
any helpful ideas??

Retype your system specs so that its not so cluttered and hard to find each spec. Otherwise your not going to get many responses. You didnt say how hot the temps were so untill I you list that I have no idea if that a problem or not. List your specs all of them including RAM, PSU ect. What temps your getting from your montioring software as well as the BIOS. List your temps in Celceius not Farenheit.

okay - hope i gave u everything u need. the hour or so i have been
on - checking mail, then checking this toms board, looking up
the system stuff. power off to get the bios data
closed bios -
*** locked up during HD search post. no HD's ***
power down 10 mins
comes up just fine.
the intel 925x and ICH6R used to be REALLY warm to the touch
so i moved a fan to cool them - that seems to drop their temp some.
I have had the same prob with both HD's. (swapped them, thinking
the new hd was faulty)
I have had this prob from day one and am getting no response from
asus tech.
i have checked for bios or any updates to drivers w/asus - non that
i can find - unless i looked in wrong place.
hope u can be some help
thanks

Ok, your going to have to be patient but I will try my best to help you through this. Ill say this upfront, my preference when trouble shooting is to rule out the possibilites systematically. This is your system so the choices are ultimately up to you, however I will stick with you on this until we figure it out as long as you dont jump from one thing to the next thus creating confusion. Dont read to far into what I just said, its just really frustrating when someone causes more problems for theirself becasue they aimlessly change this and that. I just wanted to be upfront about that.

My initial thgouhts are that you have either a PSU problem or a RAM issue. I need to know the specs of both. Manufacture, model, speed etc.

Are you seeing any blue screens or error messages?

Go to Start/Programs/Acessories/System tools/System Information click on this and then click the = beside Component look down the list for Problem devices and click on it. Tell me what if anything is listed. Dont get upset if something is because it doesnt necessarily mean that their is a problem.

Is your MOBO the E-Premium or just the Premium?

HI, ok no prob with the time thing etc.

no blue screens or error msgs
just solid lockup ctl-alt-del wont touch
immediate restart - no hard discs/boot found
long cooloff restart - like no prob existed.

anyway heres the problem devices :

I almost fell out of my seat when I saw that OKIA Power supply, and yes PSU=Power Supply. Im sorry to tell you this, but it is a peice of crap. Unless they have come out with something new and improved, but I doubt it we have found your problem. OKIA is a terrible PSU. The problem with PSU's is that there is not a very good standard that the manufactures must adhere to when producing or rating them. Just because a PSU is rated at 550W doesnt mean that it can hold up to that or even will maintain that much power. Keep in mind that before you told me the brand PSU that you had I already was suspecting the problem to be either the PSU or the Memory. I do not want you to spend money on something that you dont need to spend it on, but that PSU is not a good choice for your system or any other system. I had an old P3 made in 1999 that I had purchased an OKIA for and in 1 week I had burnt up 3 OKIA PSU's. The retailer was hard headed and kept replacing them with a new one. After the 3rd one he gave me an Antec and no more problems. Do you have accsess to another PSU that you could put in your system just to test it? I can give you some brands to consider, just let me know what your thoughts are. I am confident that this is your problem, howver I wouldnt blame you a bit at this point if you were to wait for other replys. One thing that you could do is check your voltages with the software" I think that it is called ASUS Probe" and in your Bios. Tell me what the readings are on the 12V, 3.3V, and 5V rails. All of these are + rails. I need to know what each rail is running at and also watch the rails for a while and see how low each one dips and let me know.

ive been runing the probe for bout an hour
tried to find something that would acces the hd
to run up the usage but disk clenup took about 3 seconds
and there isnt a scandisk - would have to shut down and
copy from old system.
one tidbit i didnt thnk to mention b4 was that it took
a week + to get anything from "happymicro" that i got
the new case & psu from due to fact psu only had a 20
pin mobo plug. they ended up selling me a conversion
plug for 24 pin for asus. I checked the pinouts to
verify what was what but couldnt check voltages since
nothing gets hot till its plugged in - except for one
5+ volt line that matched the mobo location so i had to
assume all others would be right. the color codeing was
the same for each of the voltages at their respective
locations.
ANYWAY... the 'probe' voltages are pretty stable
12v - 12.249 to 12.302
5v - 5.145 to 5.171
3v - 3.28 to 3.296
vcore- 1.456 steady
TEMPS
cpu 33/91 mobo 32/89 both been steady
which is weird since when
i was watching the bios temps
they fluctuated more and were
cpu usually bout 113f but then
the house is cooler today.
one thing i am going to do today - have to go to
walmart for stuff and am going to get a colman cooler
repair kit - mount it on the side panel and splice into
one of the 12 volt lines - should drop the temp inside
a bit - nothing extravagant since there is so much outside
air circulating but it might do something - cant hurt
even if it burns out the psu - think we already figure
it to be the possible prob. will try to check the volts
on the sata power cable soon as my son returns my meter.
The only xtra psu's we have laying around are old 150 and 200w units - not even enuf to match mobo minimums. 🙂
what part of the country u in ?
im in or
get back to u later

Im from Mississippi.

Your voltages do look fine, but that doesnt mean that they are holding when they need to. If you pick up a PSU like an Antec, Thermaltake, Fortron Source, Sparkle, Enermax, etc... you will see that yours weighs nothing compared to the ones I mentioned. I do beleive that you need to get a quality PSU as I think that this is the most important part in any system. They will either allow your system to run stable or choke it down. The other suspect was the memory which I would stress test next. You need to download this. <A HREF="http://www.benchmarkhq.ru/english.html?/b_e.html" target="_new">http://www.benchmarkhq.ru/english.html?/b_e.html</A>
Run this until it locks up reboot and then check to see if you get mem errors. One thing that bothers me is that you have only one stick of mem and that makes it harder to rule out. You do realize that with only one stick you hurt your performance by losing the ability to run in Dual channel mode?

The 20 pin is not recommended for your board but that by itself isnt the problem. I just realized that your RAM isnt one that I am familiar with. Its not listed on the ASUS compatibility chart for your board or at least I didnt see it. That may be problem #2. Dont know yet though. Next time you get RAM get it from Crucil, Corsair, Kingston, OCZ, names like that. Also get it in 2 matched sticks so that your system will run un dual channel mode..

downloaded 4 of the test pgms. will run them shortly.
installed the cooler - only droped the v 12.143 from
12.302/249 and is steady.
But.. the type of unit i got is a transfer plate
and dont think its contributing any coolness.
nuther 34 bucks down the drain. 🙂
was bidding on kinston ram chip but it went way
over the by-now for this OEM unit and they have a
regular business web site and guarantee all their
stuff - so if it doesnt check out then theres some
hope on return or trade.

Your temps are ok for now, and it does make a big difference on cooler days. I need to ask you a couple of questions about your intentions with this system. What do you use it for and do you intend on OC'ing? Also and this is very important. Does that MOBO have a software program called ASUS PROBE? If it does, launch it and go to the settings tab and make sure that the recording button in on. This will record on a graph your temps voltages and fan speeds. also make sure that the interval is set to 1 - 2 seconds. When you refer to temps, always use Celcius. You need to go to the ASUS Website and make sure that any RAM that you buy is on the compatiblity list. Or you can ask me and I will look it up.

When I hear back from you we will go into the system event logs and look for issues their. Do you have an instant messenger service by any chance? We may make more progress talking that way.

me thinks ive got it ! ran the 'probe' and then doom
usual lockup - wait till cool - checkd history and the
12v line went below 12v just at lockup.
unplugged the cooler that i had put in and re-ran doom
After the lock/reload the volts had droped to 12.10
unpluged 2 of the case fans.
it was bout 1:10am figured 5-10 min play time then i
would go to bed and continue today -
about 0330 and still going strong - unbelievable - been
shootn spiders and creepys for so long -
sooo seems i need to do some seriouse power supply
shopping !
the fans on this thing are wimpy - dont put out much
air. coupled with poor design - this 550w psu is prob
only good for a very low end pc. or a door stop 🙂_
ted

Glad you got it figured out. That OKIA is good for nothing if you want to know the truth. Your system is going to need a quality PSU with at least 400W and I would shoot for more on the lines of 450 - 500W. I wouldnt run that system with that PSU if I were you. It can damage the MOBO. Some good PSU's are ,Thermaltake, Antec, Fortron Source, Sparkle, Enermax. The Fortron Source is going to be the best Price/quality and Sparkle is the same PSU. If you need one right away and have4 a Circuit City or BestBuy around you can get an Antec from one of them. If your going to order one then I would get one of the new split rail PSU's. If you need more info let me know. Oh, and when comparing PSU's notice the differences between the # of AMPs on the +12V, +5V, and+3.3V rails. The more AMPs the better.

Folding is somewhat of a simulation of a process. In this case they are trying to solve the mysteries surrounding diseases such as cancer. Basically there are hundreds of thousands of induvduals out there that let their computers do this simualtion. The result is that our combined efforts will save lives maybe even your on.

Actually folding is a very good stress test for breaking in a new system. It will use various resources of your system and does a great job of letting you know if you have a problem or not. Most of the members here use this to test their systems. Just be sure that you join our team 40051. We are wroking towards the top 100 in the world. The other advantage is that the old timers here really appreciate your effort and being a team player. No pressure, but we would live to have you.

Post a link to the PSU that your looking at.

Just read it! The Blue Storm was the best price/perf that I saw. The only other one I would seriously consider for a new system for ME would be the Enermax and I'm not spending the extra $90 for that.
