I have a new P5B-E and running Vista. The software that came with the board I assume has all the utilities I need for the board, but it will not load becuase it says it doesn't support Vista.
Has anyone else run into this?
I checked ASUS and I don't see anything that will allow me to d/l those utilities. I guess I need them (not sure what exactly they are).
Any help would be great!!!

Nice time for such a post.

I just purchased my new computer with dual-boot. WXP 32-bit and Vista Home Premium 64-bit and an Asus P5B-E Deluxe mobo. It should be preloades to my specifications when I'll get it next week, ut I'll keep that in mind just in case.

I am going to buy the P5b-e for a NEW rig that I am building. I was planning to install Vista Premium OEM as the only OS... will I run into trouble doing this, or will the Vista DVD take care of the drivers to get the install going?

should run fine just d/l the drivers and utilities for vista from asus web site.
And I would reconsider OEM if I were you. With OEM license you'll get the key that can only be installed/activated online once, and if someday you'll have to format the drive - vista bye bye

Will I be able to get to an OS and browser with which to download the drivers, or should I download the drivers before?

I plan to recycle my current HP harddrive that has Media Center installed. It is OEM as well so I was told I had to buy a new one. I thought that microsoft would give me another chance with a OEM Vista if I had to reformat. Doesn't one just call and ask for another activation number?

Thanks for hints on my upgrade.

Not if you have oem license

OEM’s lower price tag is reflected in the fact that Microsoft does not offer technical support for this version as it does for a Full Retail. They assume that any individual purchasing an OEM Operating System will be knowledgeable enough - or have access to enough technical resources - to handle the situation on their own.

OEMs also bear a slightly different re-installation policy than the Full Retail: once an OEM version is on your machine, it’s on there for good. You cannot transfer this version to a new computer later.

To be honest I am not sure if vista will have the driver for your mb's lan(it should though, one of the niceties of vista is that it has a lot of drivers built-in), but just to be on a save side i would d/l the drivers before installing and save them on flash disk or something like that.

That sounds like good advice. I'll pick them up today. Just ordered the board, looking forward to it on Tues.

I looked up OEM Vista, and it said that if you switch out parts a lot on your machine, you may need to call in and get another activation number, but you do not have to re-order. I don't have the link handy but it was recently discussed on the TR forums.

EDIT:

Here it is:

"In addition, users should still be subject to the same familiar re-activation restrictions as users of a retail Vista license and Windows XP, a spokeswoman said. Users can alter the PC's hardware substantially, but they will be forced to reactivate – not repurchase the OEM software – if they do, she said."

You're right about more than one machine though. I am not a system builder (other than one for myself), so I will only need to put it on once, and reactivate if I screw it up.

In addition,
Any "retail version" of Windows Vista permits any hardware changes you wish to make, now or in the future. If you have an "OEM version", then the only upgrade not permitted is the motherboard.

You can activate/reactivate Windows Vista an unlimited number of times as long as it is installed or reinstalled on just one computer.

from microsoft's "vista community" crap

Vista should have the LAN drivers already. I have been using Vista since Beta 2 and it was always had the drivers to my rig already on there. By drivers I mean basic chipset and lan drivers. Onboard audio, RAID and all that mess didn't have drivers built in, nor did I expect it to.

I agree with your rec though; definitely put drivers on a flash drive or CD-R before you really get down to building. I have been caught in that awkward stage where you need drivers but you can't get on the net before, it isn't good.

Just my 2 cents on Vista

Right, I just need to be able to get on the net. I just downloaded all the new drivers tho just in case. Will do the audio etc. when things are up.

True that, don't know about beta 2, but retail has 1500 more drivers than rtm. 8) :D

Goo. I knew they were trying to integrate drivers (obviously for compatibility with the new kernel, but also to shoot a shot across Mac's bow) but I didn't know to what extent they actually had drivers. I have noticed that many things do work well in the RC2 without having to download drivers, however I am putting off buying a retail copy until Crysis or some other DX10 game comes out (Halo 2 will most likely cause me to upgrade).

There is no reason to upgrade now (for me) due to the lack of 3rd party software. I know it is alot better than 2 months ago, but I am still waiting for some big items to come out: R600 (yes I realize that is hardware hehe), NIS for Vista (last I knew it was in beta), Clock gen needs an update (never have gotten it to work on Vista) and a few other items. Vista will be a solid OS, but the timing just isn't right for me yet (nor is the capital expenditure related to DX10 lol).

Wrong... even MS doesn't limit you to one install, just one machine. You can always call them if you have trouble and they will activate you as long as it is clear that it is still onthe original machine.

I've activated my OEM XP around 5 or 6 times with no trouble... MS's licencing specifically ties the license to one machine, and not one installation.
