- Asking on behalf -

so i got a P7H55-M for free with no cpu, was thinking of putting in a i5 750 can get one for about 30usd but i was looking around on the net and seen the xeon x3440 for the same price and it HT's to 8 core and can fit in my socket so its look like a good buy.

would i have to do a bios hack tho ? is it just a waste of time look at it ?

That board doesn't officially support any Xeon CPUs so a BIOS hack would definitely be required (if you can find one), and that would have the potential to brick the board. Not worth the risk IMHO. Stick to those which are on the official compatibility list.

(Incidentally, just because a CPU matches the socket type on the board doesn't necessarily mean it's supported).

i dont see it offiially support a bios hack may be required

if you gotta hack it....seems more trouble than it's woth. unless you absolutely need the performance and wanna put the research in.

It should work. I have one in a P7P55D-E LX, which also doesn't officially support it. However since the X3440 is basically an underclocked i7-860 (which both boards DO support) it should work fine. Mine just dropped in and ran, no BIOS hacking necessary.

True, however most manufacturers don't bother to list the Xeons on their compatability charts, so there's a good chance that if your board supports several CPUs with the same core (in this case Lynnfield), it will probably support the related Xeons.

ALL 1156 xeons are supported on H55 and P55 chipsets. Doesn't matter what the board is. Asus and other motherboard manufacturers often do not update their list for non-consumer CPUs. Anyone that says "x34**" doesn't work on this or that board are wrong.
