I installed PF as stand alone and can't get it to open for play.
Message: can't locate cdrom drive and problem with rts.dll.
Tryed removing and reinstalling several times but same problem.
Tryed disc 2, disc 1, updated dx using disc version.
Anyone else have this problem and how did you get around it?
I do use a cdr-rw drive and also a dvd cdr-rw drive- could it be that
both drives will not run it? I do not have any of the non compatable
drives mentioned.

As I said, used #2 in both drives. Something seems to be wrong with
rts.dll finding the drive. Installed fine, just can't find it to play
it.
No trouble with il and ilfb but I guess they are sep. games and not
related to any trouble with pf.

I had the same exact problem, soo frustrating, but easy to fix. A google
search of the problem led me to the Ubisoft Forums. There is a file
downloadable from the ubisoft website called rts.dll. It is only 104k so
no worries if you're on dial-up.
Place this file in your c:\ubisoft directory and also in
c:\ubisoft\pacific fighters directory and problem solved.

Hope this helps,
Rich

Rich is correct, i had the same problem.
The new rts.dll does the job.

Thanx for your input. I knew it used disc 2 but I tried even the remote
chance of disc 1 as well as trying both my drives. This game uses "Star
Force" copy protection- needs disc 2 in the drive to work and I don't
think any way to defeat it- and so, wont even try. I have a legal copy
and will just use the discs I have.

More than helped- solved the problem- game now working. I really had my
doubts about this working tho. The orig. rts.dll file is 1.24mb and
this one is 104k. I had previously seen someone on the forum saying
that the file does not copy correctly from the disc and I recopyed it
directly- same file and still didn't work.
You say to also copy it to the ubi, pf dir. but I don't have a pf dir.
in it- only Forg. Battles and regis. dir. in it.
Anyway, it works fine now and I am forever gratefull for the fix.
To be honest, my computer doesn't come close to meeting even min. req.
for sim but at least it runs (poorly) rather than having 2 coasters). I
am happy I didn't have to deal with their tech. support. They would
have told me "what do you expect? your machine doesn't meet min.
specs."
Now have to dl the patches.

Yes, it did it. Thanx for confirming it. Why couldn't they incl. a
small file on the disc and a note in the readme file about it? I know
they ran out of room on the cd but surely 104k would fit somewhere and
a prominent notice on the website should have mentioned it.

That problem is now solved but I am left steaming that they created it
in the first place and made no mention of it to us buyers of the game.
It seems that not only does copy protection not protect, but it has an
added feature of keeping legal buyers from not playing the game

I dunno but its CD2 that should be in the frive.

Yeah, but I saved 50% of your time :)
Tried a NoCD hack?

Actually, Rich, Rob and Lange are all correct :)

The copy protection scheme in the original rts.dll doesn't like some CD
and DVD drives for some reason. By getting another rts.dll (update from
UBI or NOCD hacked rts.dll from all over the web), you avoid the false
positives from the protection scheme and can finally enjoy your game.

Hopefully, for Battle of Britain Oleg will license Starfor... oh,
wait... nevermind 😉

Mr. S.
