Packet loss on Netgear R7000 router using wired connection. Seems to be weirdly happening when I alt tab in certain games like League of legends, maybe that is just a coincidence though. While playing D3 though, and I alt tab while in fullscreen windowed, I get very high ping when its in the background. Then when I tab back into the game, the ping shifts back down in intervals. This causes weird packet loss for upwards of like 10 seconds, which is pretty bad you might imagine. On league of legends specifically though, ping doesn't move, just packet loss for 5-10 seconds, also pretty bad.

Don't know what to do, i've read things like router firewall issues, but i've port forwarded League/Diablo 3, and it's still occuring, i've contacted blizzard about the d3 issue, but I have no clue what to do, they just listed 20 things it could be and to try them all, to no avail.

Some games idle/pause(stop sending packets maybe in this case) out when you alt tab. They may also go unresponsive for a short time when alt tabbing back into them.

A solution to this may be to use a games build in fake fullscreen/boarderless window/maximized window mode. I know when a player would alt tab in SC2 everyone would have to wait for them.

Check your game options to see if you have this setting. It will make alt tabbing faster and most times stops games from idling.

If you have packet loss at other times, you have many pieces of hardware you pass on the way from you to a game server and it only takes one screw up to bring things to a halt.

Fake fullscreen meaning fullscreen windowed? If so I have both those options checked for LoL and d3

No, I haven't tried other games, I wouldn't know what to try other than these 2. I don't know if i'm running the latest drivers of my network card.

You can normally get the latest ones from your system or motherboard makers website.

In general you also always want the newest video card drivers. Even routers have firmware updates(to solve actual issues with the routers own performance. This does nothing if the issue is internet related.).

Strange that you would only have this issue on games and not normal internet use.

I think I have everything up to date, I checked my routers firmware and it's up to date. I used device manager to check the network card and it is, along with my gpu on nvidia's website. I'm so frustrated with this, I haven't had this happen before with my old router, I'd still be using it if I didn't have to upgrade it to support my higher speeds.

Do you think that It could be some sort of bandwidth/flow control noticing the application in the background when alt tabbed and not sending packets because of not enough bandwidth? I don't know if this is enabled or how to disable it. I'm using Killer e2200 instead of the general intel network cards because I have a z97 gaming 7 mobo.

I would certainly look into the software for your network card.

Routers also have a QOS(Quality Of Service) feature, but normally that makes things better not worse. QOS tries to prioritize packets that are time sensitive(games/streaming video/music/ect over things like downloads.).

So you have no problems at all with your old setup and the same card? Sometimes when you get a faster connection, your router or network card if it uses QOS has to recheck the speeds. Without accurate speeds the QOS setup does not work right.

QOS works by knowing just how much bandwidth you have(the ones I have seen only care about upload bandwidth) and shaping traffic(hold up some download or even website traffic to let other things like games and other realtime data get out first.) so that it fits within this limit.
