Ok i have aearch for info on virtual memory paginf file and come up with little. I have 640mb of ram and use about 250mb of my page file (set to something like 1224mb) How much should i set the page file to and does the page file slow down my system and disabling it give any performance improvemnts because it uses only the ram? PS: i only have on hd

hi,

u usually set yoru page file to double size of your RAM (if u have 500MB of RAM then set your page file to 1000MB).

anyway, u have 640MB of ram, thats enough for common use of windows... if u run high consumers of ram app only then it will use the page file.

anyway, never disable your page file for if your RAM will run out your system will significantly slow down!!!

I have 2gig ram and 73 gig hard drive. My page file is 1024 MB
This works for me. At some point, you do not need double RAM, and at lesser amounts, may need more than double.
There are some programs that require a page file, most do not.
The page file exists so your os can function even if RAM is low.

No matter what you choose I recommend making the max and min space allocated for swap the same. Just do 1024 and 1024. 1GB is a nice round number and you shouldn't have any probems with that much allocated, at least I never have.

I often read that the page/swap file is recommended to be 1.5 X your ram ... not sure why 1 1/2 X RAM, but it's what most tech sites say.

But if you have 2gigs of RAM, you do not need 3gigs of swap for a total of 5gigs, 1gig will do.

In reality it does not really matter what size of swap is, as long as it does not go below min and max. Mid range will do just fine, or best to take a look in the task man and see what is page file size at a regular use and set it a notch higher.

..this is very useful and helpful place for information...

blah is right! Start out setting min at something conservate, like 128 meg, with max at something big, like 1024 meg. If you find that it periodically is increased, up the min to 256, repeat.

Massive page file is not beneficial, nor is miniscule page file. You just want enough to match your current needs.
