I need help Im using Vista in Virtual Memory i foolishly entered a large amount into the Initial size and when I restarted my computer it took forever to load, then i restarted in safe mode and it took a long time too. I tried to change it to system managed size and Automatically manage but when i check it again after restarting the No paging file is ticked. I seen a box appear in the bottom right hand side of the screen that said something about a corrupted file. The box went away after a few seconds but i think it said corrupted file in System Properties. I guess meaning the page file. Im using a IPad and was reading a little and someone said go into Windows Explorer and tick show hidden operating system files and go into the C drive and delete the page file.says file then go and set the Virtual Memory and restart computer and it will set but i dont know if thats a safe thing to do or the right thing to do please help.

It is certainly possible that Recuva was installed when installing another app like CCleaner or Speccy. I have seen them bundled, requiring an active de-selection to prevent their installation. Adobe has done this with their own and other (like McAfee) products as well.
I did install it to recover some photos

And actually Windows XP and Windows Vista were NOT especially good at managing the pagefile and virtual memory configuration. And Windows 7 was mediocre. It wasn't until Windows 8.1 and 10 that it got fairly good at it.

For Windows Vista and XP I'd just set the minimum to 2048 and maximum to 2048 and forget about it. The only thing you REALLY need it for unless you have very little memory installed is giving the system the ability to use it for crash dumps, but if you have less than 6GB of RAM you might need it for actual operations if you run low on memory.
Okay thank you.
Someone on the forum told me to set it at something like 8029 each.

Even when left to it's own devices, the system practically never allocates more than 2000-3000 mb for virtual memory anyhow so there is no sense in doing so manually. At most, you could set it to 4096/4096 but there is no reason to ever require more than that, and it's unlikely you'd ever even need that amount. There is no sense in intentionally creating bigger writes to your drive constantly and unnecessarily. And that too is the main reason for setting the minimum and maximum to the same amount, so the system isn't constantly writing to the pagefile.

Thank you i appreciate!

Honestly, I think the obvious thing to do here is to simply wipe the drive and reinstall Windows. There seem to be a lot of issues going on simultaneously and I'm fairly confident that this was far from the first awkward tinkering with Windows that this install has experienced.

I just reinstalled Vista but since INternet Explorer is a dead browser, every time i get connected to the internet Internet Explorer says cant display th page. I had a Maxthon file on a USB ready to install but when i click on it nothing happens. I just realized i did install SP2 yet so im doing that now. I had a feeling I wouldn’t be able to get online so I put sp1 and sp2 on a usb. Maybe Maxthon will install after i instal SP2. Im going to use a friends computer and download Firefox ESR 52 and Opera 36 they both worked before i reinstalled Windows.

You can download the Chrome or Firefox installers on another machine, put it on a USB flash drive, plug it into your current machine and install it. You will need to download Firefox version 52.9 as versions newer than that do not support Windows Vista.

The bottom line here is, your operating system has been dead A LONG TIME. You would be VERY WISE to get a copy of Windows 7 and install that if you have no possibility of a newer machine because yours is really old. Windows 7 is probably the newest OS that would be supported on that machine and unfortunately Visa is not among the OS versions that were eligible for a free upgrade. If you get a valid Windows 7 license you might actually be able to install Windows 10 on there and eliminate all the problems with the old software.

thank you Darkbreeze. I went to a neighbors downloaded Firefox 52.9 but got home to see 91.3 downloaded on my uSb by accident. I also downloaded Opera 36.0 that worked on my computer before the reinstall, i just tried it, it don’t install, also just tried Maxthon5.1.3.2000 wont install. Im showing connected to the internet but maybe im not. If there was no internet connection would these browsers still install?
If so, why wont they install?
I cant update to Windows 10 until I update to 7 correct?

he made another post about hard faults today, I merged it into this as I think its the same sort of problem.
Page file usage and hard faults are the same thing. All a hard fault is, is the CPU accessing page file as the info it needs isn't in ram.

Probably fixing one fix other.
thank you im sorry for more posts in wrong catagories i been desperate. I reinstalled windows today everything seems okay so far.

i had to reinstall Windows again this morning because i made a mistake and deleted the graphic driver from device manager, the screen went black even during restart, i kept reseating the card and disconnected the main wires from the motherboard.
But i did notice towards the end of the installation i think it was during SP2 the screen froze with artifact just like it use to before my first reinstall. So, it very weird the reinstall fixed everything but it happened , could SP@ maybe fixed it hasnt done it since.
Makes me think its a memory, graphics card or power supply issue.
I have ran Windows Diagnostic Tests and they all pass and like i said the reinstall has everything going the way it should. Night and day compared to the problem before reinstallation.
Also im going to make a new post about a weird problem installing browsers after reinstallation.

Which category should i post that on?

I'm amazed we even still HAVE a Vista category. They must have recently added it back in because I know for a while there was only Windows 8.1, 10, 11 and Legacy, and Vista, XP, etc. fell under legacy but at some point they must have decided to add it back. Maybe they knew you would be coming along at some point. LOL.
