I had the bad luck of turning on my laptop and it giving me the problematic symbol. My genius Bar friend said to reinstall the OS. So I did and now the partitioned hard drive is recognizing only one part of the partitioned drive. It see's the other part but will not recover in disk utility nor will it verify it. I've lost loads of important data but have a 2 month old Time Machine backup (Yes I know, lesson learned on that) but how do I get it to recognize the other partition? It's been 2 weeks and with only 32 GB of hard drive I'm dying. It won't let me restore from the Time Machine as there is not enough room. 🙁

i guess no one is going to address this. My hard drive is a 500 GB drive but I only have access to 32 GB of it.
Does anyone have any tips to either restore it or format it? I cannot load the Time Machine backup as 32 GB is way too small.

10 days later, still no one has answered. So I joined this forum to ask for help and if there was response probably would have stayed but seems there is no real help unless you're a seasoned member. 🙁

It sounds as if you formaatted the entire di sk when you reinstalled the OS. I think you now have to reformat the unused portion of the disk, restore from your out-of-date backup, and put it down to experience.

Being snide about other forum members is not the most likely path to a helpful answer - sometimes there are no useful answers other than "you're borked" and, for some reason, people don't like hearing that. If you want professional support pay for AppleCare.
