Are these parts compatible? I asked earlier if the PS is the right size, I'll change it if I get an answer. Will this work for dual monitors in the short term without the video card?

I don't think that you need 16gb ram, that seems a little overkill for the video card. The same thing goes for your cpu. If you got an i5 3570k and 8gb ram, you could get a $200 gpu.

Is the gpu the only consideration for the ram? What if I want to run Win7 in a virtual machine from inside Ubuntu? Is image processing like gimp or photoshop done mostly in the cpu or gpu. I thought that ram was important for this too. I'm thinking that high clock speed is important for rapid single thread execution, like when I run data analysis code on my large data sets. Are any of these misinformed? Definitely want the quad core.

No, an i5 is a quad core by the way. Next time you ask for help on a rig. Specify what kind of rig it is. They don't all work the same. If you don't specify people will assume that it is for gaming

Are you trolling? Of course the CPU has a cooler on it. It would burn up without one. Not literally of course but your computer would crash as soon as reached 70C or so. There is a stock cooler for them but they are terrible. You want a hyper 212.

you need a better cooling even if it is not overclocked. 3770k in stock cooler will reach reach 90 celcius under full load easily, this will shorten lifespan

Just took a quick look at the hyper 212 and want to know what's the most important figure for merit by which to judge the cooling power of the cpu cooler. Is it fan speed or heat sink material? Both? Are all $30 coolers kind of the same or is there something to look for.

How should I be checking the cpu temp using Win7 and Ubuntu? What should my target temp be for my processor?
Do I need to worry about temps on an SSD?

Glad I'm asking y'all I hadn't considered this at all. I'm I total rookie.
