Pavillion a220n slow load issues.

I think I may have way too many programs running in the backround. My system performance has slowed to a crawl as of late. In the processes folder in my task manager, it seems like a lot of the processes are appearing more than once, and bogging down my system resources. Can anyone tell me what processes are absolutely necessary. For example, I have svchost.exe running 2-3 times under owner, and 1-2 under network, and system. Aside from adding more RAM (I have 512MB), what can I do to improve overall system performance. It's really killing my gaming. It takes about 10 min from the time I click on the short cut to when then game is finished loading. Please help.

its slow because its a HP

HP put dso much bad software on the computer half of the sofware they put on the computer runs in the background try the msconfig utility to stop programs from starting up with the computer

I've already done that. I deselected everything in start-up which has helped a little. HP does put a lot of worthless crap in their machines though.
