Hi,

My monitor is connected to the VGA using a displayport cable.

My speakers (Bose Companion II) are connected to the PC (bottom port) and to the monitor (Aux in)...see picture:

Now, on windows i can select between the audio coming from the mobo or the monitor.

Is one better than the other?

What monitor has an optical input? Because sound is routed through the display cable be it DP or HDMI, so a monitor with optical would be redundant. Unless you mean TV?
I'm assuming he is connecting the Monitor and PC via Dlink only.

Perfect, thank you!

Just another question...I noticed that my monitor and MOBO have also the optical port (TOSLINK?)

Should i use it?

What do these have in common with a simple 2:1 analog speaker setup?

TOSLINK
HDMI
DP
Read Analog input?

They all will output 24 bit 192 kHz.

Keep it simple and don't add more connections because you're not improving the audio quality over what the rear audio jack can give until you replace the speakers themselves.
