[SOLVED] PC being connected via ethernet & tpLink significantly slows internet speeds

Title explains everything really, when I connect my PC to the internet via tpLink & ethernet the download speed drops to around 8mbps, compared to over wifi getting a 50Mbps download, whilst the upload speed stays the same. Any help diagnosing/fixing this issue would be greatly appreciated

I'm sorry but the title doesn't explain everything. What are the specs to your system? What is the model for your TP link adapter(is it a wireless adapter or an Ethernet adapter)? Make and model of your router? We can move forward from there and hopefully towards a resolution to better bandwidth. Speaking of bandwidth, what sort of a package are you paying for from your ISP? Have you tried working with another known working Ethernet cable?

its a custom pc running windows 10 with an asus z170-k mobo, i7-7700 cpu, 500gb ssd 3.5tb hdd and a gtx1070, the tp link is a powerline adaptor (TL-PA411) and the router is just a standard virign media hub 3.0, not 100% on the package as the internet comes included in the rent of the house (student renting privately) and ive tried with a couple of ethernet cables to no avail

Your title actually makes it less obvious. Tplink makes a massive number of products and powerline network equipment is only a very small part.

Those powerline units are older technology the newer ones based on av2 technology that you see with numbers like 1000 or 2000 work much better. Even then you would be extremely lucky to get 300mbps.

Still the units you have should get you much better than 8mbps. It is mostly about the electrical wires in the house which you can do little about. There is not much you can try. You can try other outlets if possible. You want to avoid having it plugged into a outlet near something with a motor like a refrigerator or even some fans. You want the powerline units plugged directly into the wall outlet. You do not want them plugged into powerstrip especially the ones with surge protection.

Powerlines can vary on how well they work depending on where they are and the electrical wiring. I would try moving them and also make sure they are being plugged directly into the wall and not through any type of power strip.

Yeah, the thing that baffles everyone in the house is that when the pc is plugged into the adapter the internet suddenly gets slower for everyone in the house, rather than just on this device

If there are other powerlines, then they can all be affected, but that is an oddball behavior.

Can you boot a linux live cd and see if you get better speeds plugged in with that?

tried the linux live cd over the weekend and to no avail, would really appreciate any more suggestions

So if the linux live cd didn't change anything, then it's something with that powerline adapter. What is the model number?
