¡Hello world!

First of all, thanks for any help you can give to me, it will be very appreciated :). I'm new at PC building so I'm here looking for some support. I've been studying a lot to be able to choose and understand components, so I have already a PC configuration I'll put here at the end of the post.

Approximate Purchase Date: the closer the better, although I'll wait until I have no doubts.

Budget Range: (800-1000€).

System Usage from Most to Least Important: Gaming, multimedia edition (Photoshop, Illustrator, Autocad) as a hobbyist, programming. I could say that I do almost all stuff on my computer so I want a powerfull one.

Are you buying a monitor: No.

Do you need to buy OS: No

Preferred Website(s) for Parts: PCcomponentes.

Location: Spain.

Parts Preferences: Intel processor and NVidia graphics card.

Overclocking: Maybe, many doubts. ¿Is it worth it?

SLI or Crossfire: Maybe, many doubts. ¿Is it worth it?

Your Monitor Resolution: I won't buy a new monitor by now, but someday I will. The monitor I have is Acer LCD V193HQV, but I don't want it to be a limitation of the PC built.

Additional Comments: It does not really matters which appearance has the case, though I won't complain if I get an amazing good-looking case 😉. A quite PC it's quite desirable.

And Most Importantly, Why Are You Upgrading: My computer is almost 9 years old, and it wasn't a high-end at the time I bought it. My PC is like a cat, it surely has 7 lifes. Some weeks ago it died for a brief moment, but it recovered itself the next day (quite odd if I remember that the Power Source's fan wasn't working :O). Despite buying a brand new computer, I will always love this one 😍.

I've considered two PC configurations.

Not allowing overclocking nor SLI:

Total: 718,85 + ???€

Allowing overclocking and SLI:
* Variations indicated with orange color

Total = 753.85 + ??? €.

All components seem to be compatible. ¿Any suggerence to improve configurations?

My existential doubts expressed as questions:

  • ■ ¿Do the configurations have bottlenecking or they are balanced?
    ■ ¿Are OC and SLI worth it to upgrade within some years?
    ■ ¿Which of both configurations would you choose?
    ■ ¿Does getting a PSU with higher W than needed by the hardware increase the power comsumption?

I think that a good case would have at least 3 fans, not little ones to reduce noise and to get a major durability.

The PSU, modular and 80-plus bronze (efficiency of energy) if not higher. I'm still a little bit lost about connectors as I don't see them personally.

Is that correct?

get the 4670k because even if you dont overclock much, its a easy way to upgrade your cpu in time, i clocked mine to 4.2ghz straight away and in the future i have tested it so il eventually hit 4.5ghz.

the ram youve chosen is too excessive speed and runs at a high voltage which is not recommended unless you really need high mhz ram, this will not have any effect for gaming whatsoever so i recommend saving money here and getting 8gb of 1600mhz ram.

with any spare cash you have i would recommend upping the graphics card to your limit, perhaps a gtx 770 or whatever you can get as this will be the main component that will determine your performance and fps in games etc.

power source depends, if you plan to only ever do single gpu gaming, 600W is all you need, if you plan to do SLI gaming you will need really around 850W. In terms of SLI i dont personally recommend it if you are on a single monitor 1080p setup, however for gaming past 1080p it can be needed for the very ultra settings, but still this is very expensive so i would stick to overclocking and pass sli. also yes bronze rated or higher is great, bronze is enough, and the connectors come with it, aim for semi-modular as this contains all the cables that are 100% required and the rest can be plugged in if you need them.

for the case.. well anything you fancy really, and considering you have chosen a ATX motherboard then just any ATX compatible case, personally i would recommend the fractal design r4, but you cant really go too wrong aslong as the motherboard fits.

Parts you can replace and add are:
Intel Core i5-4670K
Asus GeForce GTX 770 DirectCU II OC
Asus Z87-A
Cooler Master HAF XM
Seasonic S12G-750

1. There won't be any bottleneck in your configuration and everything will run smoothly.
2. OC is surely going to benefit you in future. Going for sli would be an option for you, if you want you can or get another better single gpu at that time.
4. Power consumption depends on the power intake or used by your pc components. Having a 700watts psu doesn't mean that it will extract 700watts but it will extract the power needed by your system.

I think I will get the OC variant. In regard to the RAM, the overall performance is the most important issue for me, I don't see if it is fast or slow as this is my first time chosing components, I just can compare them. If 1600 MHz is a good speed, I'll get one.

Viewing what you have said about SLI, I think I won't use it. If I have the possibility, it's ok but it doesn't matters anymore.


I like these pieces, however I'm not sure about them.

The case is a little big, but it doesn't matters if it is quite cool and good.
The PSU seems to be very good, but it is not modular, ¿wouldn't be preferable to pick a modular or semi-modular one?

Following your recommendations the configuration would be:
Total = 1043,9€.

Edited: The RAM has changed to a 1600 MHz one.

that case has excellent air flow to keep your components and your build running cool. There isn't any major difference of modular other than detachable cables. I couldn't find anything better than that so i recommended seasonic psu and i am sure it won't disappoint you ever. In your build, everything looks well and good. You are all done here for the best.

That configuration looks awesome :pt1cable:, it's my choice at the moment.

Just one thing more.

To compare prices, I have made a non-OC configuration (trying to keep the same performance except to the graphics card). It's quite cheaper even if I upgrade the GPU to a GTX 770. Here I would be loosing the chance to do OC, but OC is not free (it increases the price).

Total = 845,85€.

It could have the GTX 770 GPU as well, if it's balanced.

Go with non-OC if you want but if OC increases price so does it increases the performance rate of your build. When you feel like your cpu isn't providing enough, just OC it and make sure you buy a decent aftermarket fan(like Cooler Master Hyper 212 Evo) at that time. Rest all well and good, enjoy 😉

Thinking about the build I've found some doubts (I'm sorry but I some kind of monsters follow me while I'm sleeping :ouch: ).

OC vs non-OC. Price, Power comsumption, performance
The OC configuration can even duplicate CPU clock frequency, boost RAM and GPU. However, it needs more expensive pieces (CPU, PSU, Motherboard and cooling system, which implies a good heatsink, more fans and a big case) than the non-OC alternative. OCing also increase the power comsumption (I don't know how much) and, in favor of stability, some features that allow to reduce energy consumption are disabled.

OCing a system can extend its life-span before we get a new build. I think that most demanding gamers need to be update with their computers as games ask for bigger PC requirements. I may be the same for multimedia developers and some specific areas like scientific computing / simulations.
That's ok but, eventually, is it still cheaper getting the OC variant in oppose of the non-OC?

For instance, how much would I save building a non-K configuration with the same performance?

Supposing the following non-OC configuration to have a similar performance than the previous build (almost the same I put above):
Total = 908,85€.

It would save (1043,9 - 908,85) = 135,05€. And that's without counting the amount saved due to the fact that electricity bill is cheaper with the non-OC system.

I'm lost. I guess this will be definately the answer that will allow me to choose a build.
