System specs:
Mobo: Asus 370X-Pro Prime
PSU: CX650M
CPU: Ryzen 1700X 3.6GHz (with arctic freezer extreme tower cooler)
GPU: RX580
RAM: 2x8GB 3000MHz DDR4 Corsair + 1x8GB Kingston
Harddisk: 240GB Transcend SSD (TS240GSSD220S) + Western Digital Blue 2TB (WD20EZRZ-00Z5HB0)
OS: Windows 10 Enterprise 64-bit (build 16299.492) Creators Update 1709
Problem description:
The PC randomly "fails". I don't know if the right description for this is "crash" or "hang" or "freeze", but basically what happens is:
1. The screen turns black. Instantly. There's no tearing or anything, just instant black. Shortly after, the monitor goes into standby mode, as if I had pulled out the HDMI cable connecting it to the GPU.
2. If audio was playing at the moment of failure, it will get stuck on the audio that was playing, and do a continuous buzzing sound. If no audio was playing, you hear nothing.
3. The PC doesn't restart and does not respond to any input device. It keeps running (based on lights inside the case) and it's just stuck in that state until I manually hold down the power button and force-restart it. It doesn't make any noise or anything, it's just... stuck.
This happens completely randomly, no specific action triggers it. It has happened over 20 times in the last 2 days. Sometimes it happens 1 minute after boot, before I even had the chance to load any programs, in other times the PC ran fine for 2 hours and then it just randomly happened.
What I tried:
- Tried to take out the RAM and run the PC with only one RAM stick at a time, checking each one individually. The crashes still happened with each individual one.
- Downloaded the latest MemTest86 Version 7.5, burned to a USB drive, and booted from that USB. It ran for over half an hour while showing zero errors and all looked fine. It did not have a chance to complete, because the PC "failed" during the process.
Overall, it seems like RAM is not the problem, and it also doesn't seem like a software problem, because the PC failed even without loading the OS. But I don't really know for sure.
- Just in case, made sure to run Windows Update, AMD and Radeon update tools, and ran Avast full virus scan. My PC is currently up to date with all drivers, and reports no irregular issues.
- Made sure all the BIOS settings are set to "Auto" or "Default". I never played with them anyway, and everything is set to the automatic recommended configuration.
- Ran WesternDigital LifeGuard HardDisk Quick Test. It reported "PASS".
- Ran Transcend "SSD Scope" scan. It shows SSD wear is 97% in the green. Gives positive marks on all tests.
History:
I had this PC for around a year. When I just bought it, there was a crash issue with BSODs and error messages, and I found out that the problem was the RAM sticks. After replacing them, the PC was working fine, without crashing for the entire last year.
The last actions I did before the current issue started were installing Streamlink, a program that lets you watch twitch streams through a program of your choice instead of using the browser. The first crash happened in the middle of watching a twitch stream on VLC.
Can't tell if this is actually related to the problem or just a coincidence. I've uninstalled Streamlink afterwards, but it did not solve the issue. The crashes happen at completely random intervals. Also, the fact that the PC still "failed" even while booting from a USB without going into the OS, makes me doubt the problem is related to installed software (but again, I don't really know for sure).
...help. I don't know what to do.
How to find out what causes the problem or at least narrow down the possibilities?
Is there any way to check error logs for this kind of pc "failure"?
What can I do to fix this?
