Hello friends. I have a win7 64bit OS on a following PC:
E5400 (2.7Ghz 400mhz fsb)/xeox x5450 (3Ghz 333mhz fsb)
Asus p5kpl-se MB
4GB of DDR2 ram, 2 DIMMs, kingston 2GB 6400, patriot 2GB 6400, timings are different
Nvidia GT 420 graphic card
500 GB hitachi sata drive.
PSU: IGmax 500c. who knows how much watts...
My PC freezes from recently. The nature of the freeze is that it is instant, you can't see it coming and there is no sound(if there is music/sound playing before the freeze, it wont buzz or similar). The screen is frozen, the mouse, the keyboard, they dont work. It can happen during windows loading, during drive check, during browsing, or during just idling. There seam to be a slight change from one of the ventilators, but I can't figure witch one is it.
2 months ago, my PC was restarting on its own. Ive came to a conclusion that it is the PSU fault, so i had it replaced. I didnt pay much attention what PSU id get, as long as its capable off running the system (witch is not power hungry anyways). At the moment I had dual core E5400 installed. The problem was solved. After not so long, Ive been given a generous offer to get xeox x5450 and 2GB of patriot DDR2 for a small price. Ive taken it.
I have modded the socket of my MB, added microcodes to BIOS, installed xeon and new DIMM, and started enjoying prty much faster PC. Than, the freezes kick in. As Ive told, there is no pattern to them. Sometimes they wont appear for days, but sometimes, they just wouldn't let you do anything, freeze on load, or just after windows starts. NOTE: PC sometimes wont power up after I reset it, or force shutdown. It just runs the fans, but the screen is black.
So, Ive started experimenting. Removed 1 DIMM, Patriot, and Ive got freeze. Tried with removing kingston, another freeze. Than I suspected CPU. This time I have decided to install new cooler on CPU, so it was a good moment. Ive put in my E5400, and after I was done putting PC together, it wouldnt power up. So, I put xeon again, same thing. Few times I did this more, and it started. The E5400 was in place luckily. It ran fine for 2 days, without shutdown, than it froze again. And again the same day, few hours later.
There are only 3 possibilities left, or 4. Its either video card, PSU, MB... OR BIOS. Since I dont have the means atm to replace 1st three, what do you think, could adding microcodes to my BIOS for xeon be the cause of these freezes? Or, maybe, any1 else had similar issue, and solved it? Id like to think its software, but sadly, seeing my PC freeze during bootup screens and him refusing to power up properly, I sincerely doubt it, in fact, ive never considered it. PSU is rather new, its crap, but it is new. I thought it might have had the problem to power xeon (witch TDP is almost double of E5400), but after my E5400 froze also, i no longer suspect it. It might be the MB, but I cant confirm it on my own. Same goes for video card, but I suspect it less than MB. Hope some1 got a good suggestion.
