Hi,

Would just like to get advice as my PC has been randomly freezing up these past few days and I can't work out why. I'll lay out the details below:

General Description
PC freezes up and becomes completely unresponsive, so far only when just browsing, with low cpu and gpu load. No visible BSOD, and have to force shutdown using the power button. Also, probably related, a few days ago I was trying to turn my PC off just normally, it wasn't in a frozen state, but it just would not turn off. It'd just boot right back up and I eventually had to just switch the PSU off completely and then back on. As a result, I turned off auto-restart on system failure and also WoL (even though I doubt it would have anything to do with that). I did have random freezes and audio stutters for months before this but I thought it was just the ftpm / amd issue.

Diagnostics / Attempts at Remedying
I looked at the memory.dmp in windbg (which I'll provide below), and it seemed to point to an nvidia driver issue which also came up in the reliability history under "hardware error" (LKD_0x141_Tdr:6_IMAGE_nvlddmkm.sys). So I updated the gpu driver and made sure clocks speeds are stock, but it still happens, though I must say it isn't frequent enough where it becomes unusable. Just a bit of an annoyance. I've also ran a preliminary memory test with the Windows tool, but I do plan on running a proper memtest asap. Afaik, Windows has TDR to prevent the gpu from hanging on a task for too long, and it would BSOD if attempts at 'resetting' the gpu fail, so if it were gpu-related wouldn't this happen?

Anyways, I have no spare parts around unfortunately so can't do process of elimination. If possible I would like to find the root cause especially if this is a sign that one of my parts is failing, so I can replace it in advance. Any help would be much appreciated, thanks!

Yeah it is quite an old PSU, bought 2nd hand few years back, has served me well but perhaps it's time for an upgrade. Reckon that's causing my issues?
Agree with @Dark Lord of Tech , PSU was good in it's day, but that was 10 years ago nearly. It's well through it's warranty, and getting a new PSU would be prudent. You've also got a 3070, and while it's not that demanding, would love a new PSU to power it! :)

A Corsair RMX850 would be perfect, and allow more power hungry components in further upgrades.

Yeah agreed, I've ordered an rm850x which will arrive today, hopefully it does fix the problem but either way will be a worthwhile investment. Will also be nice to be rid of the eyesore mustard cables that I'd been using up until now. I'll keep this thread open for the time being and see how I go. Cheers @Dark Lord of Tech @Roland Of Gilead
You're very welcome. Let us know how it goes today.

Happy gaming :)
