Question PC Gaming Rig crashed in my attempts to re-build: please help!

Hi there, would love some assistance / guidance on a situation I'm in at the moment with my current rig which failed to start a few days after I installed some RAM.
This was the rig before I tried the installation:

• 1TB SSD & 250 gb SSD (1tb was a recent addition just to be used as a Steam library. All windows OS & other data is stored on the 250gb)
• Intel i7-6700K 4.00GHz 4 core
• 16gb (2x 8gb) DDR4 Corsair
• GeForce GTX 1050 Ti
• EVGA 600W1
• Extra Fan unit attached to the motherboard
• 29" curved monitor 3440x1440x59 hertz
• Windows 10
• ASUS B150M-A Motherboard LGA1151

I did my research and bought 2x 8gb Corsair CMK16GX4M2A2133C13 Vengeance LPX 16 GB (2 x 8 GB) DDR4 2133 MHz C13 XMP 2.0 High Performance Desktop Memory Kit, Black to go in the remaining 2 slots on that motherboard and upgrade myself to 32 gb. The installation I thought went fine, and the computer turned on and my system properties said that my RAM was now at 32gb.

So all good - but I then went away for a few days, and on my return, the PC wouldn't produce a video feed to the monitor. I'd turn it on, get a black screen, the Display Port would recognize something was there but nothing would appear on the screen. I would repeatedly turn off & on for a few occasions but no luck. Tested on another monitor and it was the same.
Took it into the shop, and after a week the guy has said that he is getting a blue screen when he connects my system to his, so he believes my OS has been corrupted. He thinks I need to do data recovery and re-install the OS. On top of this, he thinks there's a problem with the motherboard as he says his test system will get him to the BIOS on occasions that he takes the RAM out, but as it doesn't make sense that the RAM itself would be the issue, I could have damaged the board somehow.

I'm not sure what to make of his advice, and without going on for too long, I don't particularly trust this guy's opinion. He asked for £125 cash up front just to do the diagnostic, no receipt, works out of his apartment, and mainly deals with laptops. He did have good Google reviews but they could be fake.

But regardless, I think I am happy to replace the motherboard & processor & possibly even the GPU if that is the simplest way to save the system as I was already looking to upgrade the rig to play some AAA+ titles (mainly Cyberpunk) over the next few months. I've put below my ideas on what I could get but I would love your feedback on what best to buy in terms of how they would all fit with the rest of the components I already have. On top of this, I need to get a new case for everything to fit in as the current one is very worn. I'd like to pay around £750 all in for the repair and the new parts.


TL;DR

1) I was thinking of upgrading to an i9 9900k or similar to save this system and have something that will be top of the range for a long time. If I did this, would you be able to recommend a motherboard to go with it that could fit with all of the components I've previously listed?

2) Would you be able to recommend a case to put this all in? Something very good for cooling (as I would prefer not to pay out extra for an additional cooling system) but not break the bank (as the i9 and motherboard will probably take me to £600 altogether).

3) The guy will probably charge me £100 to replace the motherboard and fix everything into the new rig. I have no real expertise in this area and have potentially already broken the thing once so I am inclined to let him do this. However, he is also going to want additional money to re-install windows and do data recovery. Is the latter something that I could just do myself? As I already have two SSD's, it makes sense to me that I can re-install windows on the 1TB SSD, and then use that to recover the data on the 250GB.

I don't know you ask that guy to do something yet or not. I think the problem is from the RAM, because you mixed the two sets RAM.

You can try to remove the new set RAM, and clear the CMOS by the jumper or removing CMOS battery. After that you should be able to boot the PC, if you do that, and the PC will do the same, no display, then the problem will be from something else.

Can you let me know why you think the problem would be the RAM, specifically where you say 'mixed the two sets'.

It was to my understanding that you can combine any amount of RAM as long as they are the same values (all 8GB) and the same as DDR4 (which they all are). I did my research on this forum to learn as much - what could have gone wrong?

I have not asked him to do anything yet so I will try and do exactly what you say when I collect it tomorrow
