PC Gigabit NIC is only connecting 100 MB/s

I have an intel(R) 82579V Gigibit Network Adapter that is locked on 100 Mb/s when I check the status of the "Local Area Connection 3". I have changed the "Speed and Duplex" from "100 Mb/s Full Duplex" to "1.0 Gigabit/s Full Duplex" but when I do my computer no longer detects that an ethernet cord is still connected (possible it is disabling that input?).

There are 2 Ethernet ports on the PC board but only 1 has ever worked and I don't see in my system hardware a second option and I do not have a second option for a "Local Area Connection" other than my wifi adapter.

I have a theory that 1 Ethernet input is for up to 100 Mb/s and the other is for the Gigibit but I can't seem to get the other one to work in any way at all (lights come on when I plug it in but Windows doesn't react in any way). I could be completely wrong, please let me know if I am.

Any ideas on what I could do to trouble shoot this issue? I have the entire house wired with Cat6 cable and I am hardwired directly to the ATT Gigibit Modem.

Thanks!

Solution
In case anyone else is having the same issue I have resolved the problem. 100 Mbps Ethernet adapters are only transferring data through 4 of the 8 wires inside the Ethernet cable. When I was switching my PC setting over to 1.0 Gigabit it would disconnect and tell me that no cable was connected because one of the wires being used in the spiderweb of networking in my home had a faulty connection that worked fine as 100 Mbps since it was not one of the 4 used wires but would not work using 8 as the circuit was not complete. Once I replaced the heads of each cat 6 cable in my circuit with higher quality cat 6 tips the connection was no longer broken and it started working immediately.

On a side note, please keep in mind that when using...

On a side note, please keep in mind that when using Cat 6 cable to read up on exactly how to do so because the tips needs to match the wire in quality and when attaching the tips you cant leave much exposed wire (3/4" to 1" max) as interference then starts to creep in and weaken your signal.

I hope I can save at least 1 poor soul out there from the week long trouble shooting and researching that I've just been through.
