So my pc has been randomly freezing recently, I've just had to push the power button to turn it off.

It's only been in the last 2 weeks and I have not changed/touched anything and I've been using it the exact (if not less) same way that I've been using it before i.e games, Skype, videos, browsing the Internet and a bit of photoshop.

Any ideas what the cause could be?

I5-4960k 3.5ghz processor
12gb corsair vengeance ram ddr3 1600
Nvidia geforce 670 gtx 2gb
Corsair PSU 650w
Windows 8.1 on 240gb Kingston ssd

What Nvidia driver are you currently on, Because the past several have been complete crap even for us 980ti owners, Constant freezes/crashes in games or pop up saying driver has stopped responding and has now recovered, Mind you this is with Windows 10 not 8.1 like you. I would still try display driver uninstaller and get the latest driver for your gpu, See if it fixes anything before trying to go through a process of elimination on each hardware component
Latest Nvidia driver seems to have resolved quite a few issues on Win 10 maybe it will help you on win 8.1

Other than that I am afraid it is a painful process of going through each hardware part in your system and checking it, Check all your cables to make sure nothing is loose, Make sure all your fans are working.
Check in your bios and see if your ram is running at it's correct speed, Ram can cause freezes if it's not set correctly.
Another thing is your temps, Take side panel off and try running some intensive games see if it freezes if so maybe you have an overheating problem.
If possible try some of your components in another system, gpu or psu in a friends pc see if it freezes.

So many things it could be such as power, heat, faulty part, driver, windows corrupted etc etc, I know exactly what you are going through in past system builds. In my latest system I had constant freezes and it turned out the bios wasn't set up correctly, My ram was running at wrong speed, Enabled XMP mode and the freezes stopped!
Best of luck to you,
