Ok so I just built a $500-550 ish budget pc and I thought all the parts were fine together but whenever I start to play some demanding games like Fortnite, some time in my pc crashes. My screen freezes completely and my audio starts messing up. I’ve had this issue for a while and I need some help please. I thought it was an overheating issue for a while but when I was playing and my pc crashed the temperature wasn’t that high so now I’m utterly confused as to how to fix it. This issue has caused me to lose around 3-4 top 2 situations and it’s been happening ever since I built my pc. Someone please help!

Solution

Fingers crossed. If the problem was your old RAM and/or/both old motherboard and you bought them only 3 months ago, check the return policy of the store and then check the manufacturers' warranty info on their websites. You may get a partial refund, depending on what you find out. Good luck!

I'd keep playing fortnite with the new hardware for at least a week or longer.

so 15 days since purchase
I tested AIDA64 using all the boxes checked. And I also tested the ram multiple times using memtest64 and prime95 tests ram as well and I believe aida64 does as well. Plus I had one stick of ram before and it crashed and I added an extra stick and it continued to crash. Do u want me to take the first stick out and try with the second one I got? And yes I did finish reseting windows 10 and putting a clean copy on my pc

Ok so i tested each ram stick seperately and I can immediately see the difference. My game hasn’t crashed yet but when I used the newer ram stick I had the game would lag here and there but it was a little playable. When I used the older ram stick I immediately started to get game freezes for up to 5 seconds and it was very unplayable compared to my other ram stick. Neither has crashed yet but if this continues I have a feeling I know which one will crash. I’ll try putting the ram in different slots and see what happens

Ok so i had my ram sticks in the first and third slots so I changed them to the second and fourth slots so I’m running dual channel on a2 and b2 and it hasn’t crashed yet but I’ll keep playing and let u guys know if it crashes

wait... your RAM: Kingston HyperX 2x4 gb

You bought them as a set, right?

No I was on a budget when I first built it in April so I only got 1 stick and I recently bought another one to upgrade it on June 30. Also it didn’t work after I changed the position of the ram sticks it still crashed so now I’m just using the newer stick and seeing if it crashes

Ok I put in one stick of ram and tried playing and it is unplayable. My game is running at a constant 1 FPS. If I put in both sticks then the game is amazing but it crashes after a while. According to the Fortnite requirements it should be playable with 4 gb of ram but I guess not. I have no clue what to do or what’s going on. Someone help

What are the specs for both RAM sticks?

Ideally you want to purchase RAM sticks as a set. If you already have one stick in your PC and want to add another stick later on, then it's recommended to buy a stick with the same speed, size, latencies, voltage, basically same RAM, as the one you have.
If you mix and match different sticks, then you may or may not get a stable system.

We still haven't ruled out Fortnite as the problem, PSU, or motherboard.

No I bought the same ram type from the same company and everything. I bought 2 sticks of 2400 MHz and ddr4 but just at different times. The item said “Kingston Technology HX424C15FB/4 HyperX FURY 2400MHz DDR4 PC Memory”

Buying ram at different times is not a good idea. Everyone on here will tell you to buy the kit together, not in singles because of potential issues. Have you tested your ram yet? I'm telling you guy. I had the same problem. Wouldn't believe it was my ram and then I tested each stick separately and it was 100% the issue. It is not rare to get a ram stick DOA. I would honestly just run memtest64 if you're on 64 bit. Do one stick at a time. If one of them is faulty it will take literally forever in comparison to the good stick to get through even a single test. You can also do this test from windows desktop unlike memtest86.

Yes one of your sticks is bad. Just because it's working for a while doesn't mean it's not the problem. You should do the memtest64 like I mentioned above. You will see instantly which stick is bad. If you remember which one gave you the 1fps, then replace that one. I would honestly suggest just replacing them both though to avoid running into this issue a second time.

Ok so i used the bad stick and the second I started the test my computer crashed. However I put in the good stick and this one also crashed the second I started the test as well. Does this mean both of the sticks are bad? Because that would really suck. And you can obviously guess at this point but I put in both and it survived the first test but crashed on the second one.

It's possible that the problem isn't the RAM, but the slot or even the imc on the processor. I would try memtest with one stick, but try it in each slot. Then repeat the same with the other stick.

Ok so i tested one ram stick and it crashed in every slot except 2 and 4. I tested the other stick and it crashed in every slot. Then when I tried the first one again it crashed in the 2nd slot. I also just tested the 4th slot and it crashed as well. It worked the first time so I don’t know what’s wrong. Is it a motherboard issue or ram issue? What now?

That memory is listed on the QVL for that board, so it shouldn't be a compatibility problem.

At this point you should probably try different RAM. However, I'd like to try one more thing first.

Ryzen can be difficult with RAM, Did you set any speeds for your RAM in the BIOS/UEFI?

I would recommend restoring the defaults in the BIOS, and make sure that the RAM is set to the default slowest speed, even though that speed may be slower than what your RAM is advertised as, and slower than the XMP on the RAM would auto set in the BIOS. Try that with one stick and see if you can pass memtest like that.

Well here’s what happens. Idk if it means it crashed but the screen freezes and it stays there stuck for a while. Sometimes the mouse moves every now and then and after a bit it completely freezes and the test does not progress at all during this time. That is what happened before and is happening now

Ok so I clicked “stop on error” and as soon as I clicked start test while the stick was in the second slot it said “graphics card does not meet minimum requirements” but it completed the test perfectly and kept going for a while. On the 4th slot my screen froze for a couple of minutes but it completed one test before freezing again for a while so I assumed it crashed cuz the mouse froze as well.

Running at 1866 with both sticks of RAM, and you pass memtest?

Try running fortnite with that setup...

I managed to survive 2 games and then it crashed again. Still have no clue what to do. I restarted and did memtest again and this time it crashed. It’s so annoying that I don’t understand what’s wrong with it
