So lately i have been running in a lot of trouble with my pc.

It all started after installing a windows 10 updatein early december i think. Basically my pc tends to just "freeze" a lot. When it freezes I can't do anything but move my mouse cursor without getting any response (even from hovering over icons and such..). When it freezes though i always noticed the HDD led was lit without blinking (solid). Sometimes after 1 or 2 minutes it comes back. This happens 3 or 4 times a day and it happens while im browsing files but also while playing games.

So i thought it was a windows 10 issue since it all started with that update. I can't roll back to any other windows versions because i have no restore points. I also tried the sfc /scannow commands in safe mode but that always freezes at 54%.

So I thought i'd just reset my pc (in the windows 10 boot menu thingy) but about halfway i got an error saying that i failed but nothing changed to my files.

I'm clueless what to do here. Is my hard drive dying or is it a windows 10 problem?

It does sound like a side effect of a dying hard drive.

If the whole PC including mouse locked up that would suggest a different problem.

It seems like your PC isn't frozen it is just locked up waiting for the hard drive to pull data.

Ive tried to update all drivers and run the chckdsk /f command. None of it seemed to have helped

Do you reckon i should just buy a new hdd?

Hi there Jari_2,

If you think that there's something wrong with your HDD, just back up the data until you sort this out.

After that, you can check the drive's health status out: http://www.tomshardware.co.uk/forum/282651-32-best-diagnostic-testing-utility
See if there are some pending/reallocated and uncorrectable sectors in the SMART report.

If the drive is in a healthy state, then I believe you can just back up all the data stored on the drive and perform a clean OS installation.

Cheers,
D_Know_WD :)

Thank you for the reply. Yesterday i tried to run chckdsk /f commands and it didn't seem to fix anything as it was done very quikly.

However i defragged my hdd (Hadn't done that a signle time in 3 years) It defragged about 60gb and most of the problems seem to have vanished. I am going to try a SMART scan, i'll post the results here

Hey there i'm back

The problems didn't seem to be fully gone just yet. Every time i boot up my pc it freezes for about 1 minute after logging in. So i tried the crystaldisk test but i'm clueless what the results mean.

I copied them here

OS : Windows 10 [10.0 Build 14393] (x64)

It seemed to have around 180mb/s mostly except for 2 tests where it's around 1mb/s. Does this mean i have bad sectors?

Cheers
