Intermittently its been doing this. Sometimes it powers on ok, sometimes the mobo doesnt seem to power up properly. Try again and it works.

Anwyay, its stopped completely now and all I get is either the CPU or DRAM mobo leds.

So far:-

  1. Removed DIMMS and put each one in one at a time in the primary bank. Random results.
  2. Sometimes case fans, and cpu fan come on sometimes they don't
  3. Did PSU test with paperclip seems fine. Or is it?
  4. Reseated power cables on mobo.
  5. Shorted the power switch - same results.
  6. Reset the CMOS -same.

Pretty sure its new mobo and cpu in this PC but apparently, son tells me, hes been having this issue before that. (Yeh I know - thanks for telling me!)

What I've done now:-
1. Order new PSU - its still original its pretty much all thats not changed. Just in case somethings not right,
2 Ordered some thermal paste.

What I'm thinking is :-
  1. Swap out that PSU see what happens.
  2. Still the same, take the cpu cooler off, reseat CPU etc.
  3. If its still not working I'm starting to get stumped. MOBO Issue?

Its strange how :-

  1. the faults are intermittent, sometimes its flagging up DIMMS but not always.
  2. Sometimes the fans inc cpu fan fire up something they don't

Any ideas anyone?

As I said PSU passes papercip test. Is this 100%? i.e. is there no other way its going to be faulty?

The paper clip test doesn't prove anything for a PSU other than it will turn on...the only way to properly test a PSU is with a load tester on it.

As far as the random start issues with your board:
1- Try turning off XMP memory profile in the BIOS...I did not find your particular ram modules on the motherboard compatibility list.
2- Do you have all of the motherboard CPU socket power connectors plugged in ?
3- Have you updated the BIOS ?

This is nuts...

About 1 in 10 it works. Otherwise it just power cycles.

So far I've tried:-
  1. New PSU.
  2. New memory (one is primary slot)
  3. Taken out of case and run with no HDD etc attached.

No change.

Just got a brand new motherboard and STILL THE SAME.

I guess it could be the cpu -any pointers as to how to interpret the LEDs?
