I brought 2x8bg ram (ddr3 1666hmz) sticks because i had 4gb before and my mobo (ga ma790xt up4d really old mobo) says it can hold max 16gb ram . When i took the old ram sticks out and put in the 2x8gb sticks my pc wouldnt post . I tried every slot and every combonation (even with old ram sticks) and nothing worked . At first i thought it was my cpu memory controller (amd phenom ii x3 720) but then i saw people with the same cpu as me saying 16gb ram worked fine . I go onto my pc (with the old ram) and into cmd . I type the command -wmic memphysical get maxcapacity- just to see that it only lets me use 2gb ram sticks per slot .Why would it be max 2gb per slot if my ram max is 16 gb and is there a way to increase/fix it ?

Solution
But on some websites (more than one and not crucial) it recommended 2x8gb sticks for this mobo and people reviewed it and said it worked but oh well . Also as i said on cmd the command wmic memphysical get maxcapacity it says i can only use 2gb ram sticks per slot so how is it 4gb dimms?

What websites?

Not sure what info Cmd command is getting but you were running 4gb dimms yeah? So they work.

Could try update bios. If 8gb dimms aren't still being recognised, it wouldn't be anything else.

I had a look at userbench, noone has ran the test with 2x 8gb. Could that just mean it wasn't tried? Or not compatible?

I was in a similar boat with my old lga 1366...
16GB total but of maximum 4GB dimms each. Gigabyte memory QVL list shows only one 4GB stick as been tested at the time of publishing. Crucial has also tested with it's own memory. Im sure other memory brands have done the same if you look at their product compatibility page for your motherboard.

You could ask those reviewers what their bios revision is.
Maybe it can be updated.
Yh that was my last suggestion . I asked someone maybe its the bios . They said u could try update it but would updating it allow me to use the 2x8 sticks or would it still be limited to 2 or 4gbs

Find you current bios version, go to website of motherboard and find the download section - Bios section they usually have descriptions of the updates.
You can review there to see what changes have been made since your board was last updated, go thru 1 at a time looking for that ram update.
You could just go for it if your comfortable updating bios.

I was in a similar boat with my old lga 1366 system, Asus P6T. About the same era as your Amd. 8GB sticks didn't work but some say it does. Im on the latest bios with it too so i don't know. I settled for 4gb sticks and left it at that.

Solution
I dont remember exact ones all i searched was "Ram for Ga Ma790xt UP4D mobo" and i checked multiple and basically all of them recommended 2x8 , 4x4 and 2x4 . I need to do some research for bios to update it aswell .
