My desktop PC which I built 3 years ago is running beautifully but for the past year or 2 i've had these completely random total freeze ups where I have to hold the power button to restart. These freeze ups may be anywhere from weeks to months apart and happen randomly regardless of idle or when i'm gaming. I'm determined to get to the root of this, as my PC runs great otherwise.

The last critical error I see from event viewer before the unexpected shutdown is this:

Log Name: System
Source: Microsoft-Windows-Kernel-Power
Date: 8/22/2017 11:55:50 PM
Event ID: 137
Task Category: None
Level: Error
Keywords: (1024),(4)
User: N/A
Description:
The system firmware has changed the processor's memory type range registers (MTRRs) across a sleep state transition (S5). This can result in reduced resume performance.

This error occurred last night however. There are more events leading up to this crash but no errors.

Things i've tried:
Memory diagnostic: Passed
Sfc /scannow: Passed
Virus scans: Didn't find anything
Kept an eye on temperatures. Everything looks good. Fans are spinning.
Checked MOBO for visible damage... Nothing.

If there's any more logs or information I could post here to help out just let me know.

what power supply do you have?

your motherboard appears to be on this list so it should work: https://pcpartpicker.com/products/motherboard/?compatible_with=PnxfrH#m=18

Have you checked you have latest motherboard drivers? BIOS included.

(S5), Soft Off: G2/S5 is almost the same as G3 Mechanical Off, except that the power supply unit (PSU) still supplies power, at a minimum, to the power button to allow return to S0. A full reboot is required. No previous content is retained. Other components may remain powered so the computer can "wake" on input from the keyboard, clock, modem, LAN, or USB device.

event appears to relate to how much ram the CPU can access when its shut down, win 10 doesn't turn off when you power it off, it goes into a form of hibernation where half open programs put in ram and other half in page file. This leads to it booting faster as when you turn it on, half the programs are already in ram. Many old drivers don't cope with this and need to be updated.

I have a M12II bronze 750watt seasonic evo edition. And no my bios has never been updated since I built the pc. I've been too afraid to try an update.Should I turn off hibernation maybe?

I know you checked temps, but have you visually checked the heatsink and made sure all the dust is cleared. I had a similar issue a few years back and it turned out my cpu cooler was caked in dust and basically overheating causing my system to freeze at random times.

I clean my heatsink out several times a year and the unit I have now is a noctua aftermarket cooler.

BIOS update could fix this, Is your motherboard revision 1 or 2?

Gigabyte Technology Co., Ltd., 970A-UD3P
latest on Rev 1 is F2g but its shown as a Beta bios... from 2014, they sure slow with betas
latest for rev 2 is FC from 2016, its not in beta.

Gigabyte boards use Q FLash, if you go to this page and click download PDF it will show you how: http://www.gigabyte.com.au/MicroSite/121/tech_qflash.htm
your PC has 2 bios so if anything, you safer running that than most of us.

a 2016 bios would at least recognise Win 10 power modes.

Your PSU should as well as even the worst Seasonic PSU is better than most. Not saying yours is bad, the opposite in fact.

I don't know if it's revision 1 or 2. I don't want a beta bios on my machine. I'm willing to try a bios update if it may stop this freezing. If I back up my files beforehand, ensure steady power supply during the process how risky is it to update the bios on a gigabyte mobo? Also, how can I be sure i'm downloading the correct bios?

Okay I have revision 1.0. The issue now is the latest bios is from 2014 and it's a beta. http://www.gigabyte.us/Motherboard/GA-970A-UD3P-rev-10#support-dl I have f1 currently. I'm thinking of just making sure I have all the drivers on that page up to date. I don't know what else to try at this point.

So last night I had another hard freeze up while the pc was hardly doing anything. Just browsing the internet. I disabled fast startup now so lets see how long it'll go now without another freeze.
