Hi, thanks in advance

My PC has been randomly restarting for a couple months with Event ID 41 (category 63) and BugCheckCode 0, no BSOD, usually when doing high power things e.g. gaming but it can happen any time. I don't do overclocking and haven't changed voltages or anything. My temperatures are normal and my fans are working fine.
There is no memory dump but let me know if there is anything other info needed

Specs:
MSI B450 Tomahawk Max
AMD Ryzen 5 3600
Radeon RX5700 XT (Sapphire)
Corsair CV650 650W PSU

I already tried:
Memtest, no errors
Running with one RAM, same problem
Using different slots on motherboard for RAM
RMA PSU, got replacement, same problem
Different wall ports
Updating windows, drivers
Quick fixes from google searches, e.g. disabling fast startup

Event Viewer:
Not sure what is relevant but this is what a crash looks like:
Critical event 41, followed by error event 6008 (The previous system shutdown at XX on ‎XX was unexpected.)
The critical event 41 is often preceded by event ID 65 (Failed with 0x57 retrieving AppModel Runtime status for package Windows.)

From what I have read, restarts with no BSOD and BugCheckCode 0 are usually hardware related. Should I RMA motherboard next? Or could it also be CPU or GPU?
I don't want to BIOS update in case it randomly restarts in the middle of that.

Thanks again, I hope this thread can help others in the future

I would backup this current HDD if you haven't already and then install windows again.
I suspect the issue is drivers are loading for the wrong hardware. If that's not it then you can reinstall you backup easy enough.
You can grant he current version of win10 from https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows10 and using the tool to create the bootable flash drive.

Thanks, I tried this but still no luck and it is still randomly restarting on the fresh Windows install.

Must be a hardware issue then?

shame i didn't get here before you replaced PSU

kernel event 41 (63) is a reaction, not a cause. After every restart, windows runs a report and if it finds the previous shutdown was unexpected, it creates that critical error. It doesn't mean PSU is bad, it just means windows doesn't know why it restarted and its recording that fact.

could be gpu or cpu really, try running https://www.techspot.com/downloads/7050-asus-realbench.html

Thanks for taking a look, here are the results, any insights? My PC randomly restarted the first time I think around OpenCL but it ran the second time

i not sure what good scores should be, I used it mainly to see if you bsod during it.

but you not getting bsod, it just crashes...
opencl, i think thats graphics cards... mostly compute cores.
OpenCL: Test focuses on GPU accelerated computing using Luxmark OpenCL rendering test. Runs entirely on all available GPUs! (Uses any GPU with OpenCL acceleration.

try running these (not at same time)

Thanks, I ran furmark for 20 mins at 1440p with no crashes, it was fine at avg 60 fps 85 degrees C. I'm not sure there is a pattern to when it restarts, sometimes its just when browsing the web, quite often when playing games and today it just crashed after logging into windows.

latest non beta bios? wonders if updating bios on a freezing PC might be asking for trouble.
update chipset drivers - https://www.amd.com/en/support/chipsets/amd-socket-am4/b450

once chipset drivers updated, what power plan are you on?
right click start
choose power options
Under related Settings, click Additional power Settings

AMD Ryzen Balanced or AMD Ryzen High Performance?
or neither? if neither, should try balanced. its good enough for most people. Only difference is cpu speed is at max on high perf and it might get more power.

Thanks again, yeah I think updating BIOS would be a last resort, I'd rather RMA my motherboard if it comes to that

Thanks for pointing out the driver updates, hopefully that does the trick

Edit: no crashes after 24 hours, gonna mark this thread as closed and thank you so much to both of you! Fingers crossed it lasts

Thanks again for help last week, since then I think crashes have reduced but still happen occasionally while gaming (maybe once an hour). I also updated BIOS before this.

I'm going to RMA my CPU and GPU at the same time, since you said it may be one of them. I think RAM is fine as I have tested with one stick at a time, do you think its worth it to also RMA the motherboard? I'd rather not do things one at a time if it could be any component

Try running this on CPU and see if it crashes - https://www.mersenne.org/download/

only way to test GPU is benchmarks like these (don't run both at once)
https://geeks3d.com/furmark/

https://benchmark.unigine.com/heaven

I don't like blind replacements, I seen people almost replace entire pc and still have problems.

Thanks, Mersenne crashed my PC after 45 minutes, I ran furmark a couple weeks ago for 20 mins with no problem. Going to try Mersenne again but I think my CPU may be the culprit.

Do you think I need to run furmark or heaven for longer?

Edit: ran Mersenne again, crashed after 20 minutes. Will RMA CPU asap, thanks I'll check in again when I get a replacement

Checking in again, looks like a new CPU fixed the problem as my PC ran Mersenne for 4 hours without an issue. Will mark this as solved and pray this thread stays closed! Thanks again both for the help.
