The economy is such that people are waking up to the fact that they can't just hop in their SUVs and drive to the mall to keep buying and buying and buying. They are beginning to realize that if the question "how will [deviceX] be better for me?" doesn't have a clear answer, they don't need to buy it just because it's "the latest."
Step outside the incessant churn.

If game makers actually used DX11 and made an effort on the PC games rather then just porting 99% of them then people would have to buy nicer computers and video cards that are less then 5 years old to play them. I am just sick of putting a new game on my PC and seeing it run at 1000+FPS. I might as well put a 360 inside my case and call it good. Gamers need more then just Crysis 2, BF3 and Skyrim with the 2k texture addon to justify spending lots of $$$ on hardware. The hard core gamers will often spend $500 upgrading their computer for their favorite game if they had to of course which doesn't seem necessary anymore. To put it simply, there has to be a big difference in graphics to get people to spend on their computer rather then using a 360 age computer.

This so called "analysts" are clueless.
The PC market does NOT refer solely to branded PC's, it also includes the OEM market.

In over 20 years now I have only bought 2 PC's (my first 2) and my Notebook so I guess we could say 3...
But every other PC that I have or ever had, I have built myself with OEM parts/software.

These are at least a dozen custom made PC's that I have built for myself, not counting others that I have custom built for friends.

Pretty sure that there are a lot of reader here with similar stories.

Denial, denial, denial... The thing is exploding in front of you.

The new generation already borne, and is 2 years old. -Heeello baby tablet!!! And you old boxed daddy PC step aside, you are old.

[citation][nom]belardo[/nom]No... a Desktop is still, just a desktop. My spanking new i5-3570K is still nothing more than a faster version of my Core2 box it replaced. As proven the "tablet fad" is over.... its not a fad.Todays $400~500 tablets are more powerful than the PCs from 2002/03 era... with more features.[/citation]

Can Tablets run Crysis?

[citation][nom]bllue[/nom]Surface-pro like hybrids are the future of computing[/citation]

I second this, but they will only converge laptops and tablets and replace them. Until hardware matures enough that it is so small and powerful to stick workstation and desktop class components into a small slate... desktops will stick around.

Why should the PC market conform to the tablet sector? Maybe some of don't want to subject every electronic device we use to touchscreen. There is a reason the Mouse and Keyboard are still around.

Quoting the analist "as PC's see significant "task infringement" by the day."

And now you know much this analist knows about pc´s.

Sad...just sad....

PC Sells will stay way alive as long as there are still engineers, programmers, architects, bank employees oh wait I'm starting to name all professions and not to mention technicians. I can't imagine a sound engineers doing a 8 channel recording with an ipad or an architect storing large ammounts of data without having at least a couple of TB's in the HDD´s, or even try to imagine a gamer playing BF3 in a 10 inch screen instead of a 30 inch monitor or even a surround config. Ipads are cool but just that, you cannot seriously use them for work or even gaming, they are just trendy and good for traveling.

Don't panic!!, also it wont change to much if this analyst is a power user, he is talking about the global computer market and not about power users and demanding jobs.

PCs will still be out there but they will be used for serious and demanding tasks, demanding video games included. But In a few years tablets will be powerful and flexible enough for 90% of users. The ecosystem will include every gadget for most common uses and interconnections.

I think you'll find that that same 90% will aknowledge (in circumstances where portability is not crucial) that a real keyboard and mouse are far better to input text/interact with. Why step backwards?

He blamed the PC industry for not recognizing and adapting to consumers' interest moving towards mobile devices.
That's like blaming a decline in automobile sales on the fact that automakers have failed to cater to the demand for bicycles. Yes, they're both transportation, but they're entirely different methods with different capabilities. Tablets are like bikes - good for short, simple tasks when you just don't need a car. PCs are the cars - they'll get you anywhere comfortably, whether or not you have a bike.
Geeks are airplanes - we'll get you there faster and you don't have to drive, but I'll be darned if it's cheap =P

The industry thinks and make us thinks we need new computer each year (to protect their profit).
Why do you think most laptop has 1 year warranty : company knows it won't last more than 3 years anyway because they have faulty parts in them.
I have a lot of costumers coming to see me because they printer stop working and the geek squad tells them their usb port is too old. The problem is it used to work so the port is fine.
Most user need it for web browsing, email, facebook and such. Yes a pentium 4 is outdated but if it still work why change is...

Well, let's not forget that when it comes to productivity, a PC is the way to go. You are not going to program operating systems, games, differnt software, keep the accounting of a company, design tehnical thing like cars, etc. on a tablet or a smartphone.
Hey, i bet the tablets and samrtphones were design on a PC.

Dextermat, that's exactly what I mean.
The PCs I have built recently for myself and my wife exceed our current needs by a considerable margin, and I made a point of selecting quality components with long warranties. I'm hoping that even GPU upgrades shouldn't be needed for the types of games I play for a couple years, and the core components should last a lot longer than that.

PC's never gona die. How can you even think about playing games like Assasins Creed or Starcraft on small and uncomfortable tablet without mouse and keyboard and on small 10" screen? And what about powerful applications like whole Adobe suite? None of mobile devices can deal with that. LONG LIVE PC!!!

PC Fan.
