pc specs:
intel core2duo e8400 3ghz
corsair vs450 psu
new sapphire hd7770 vapor x dual fan ghz edition graphics card
2x 4gb 1333mhz rams
gigabyte ga g41m combo mb
windows 8.1

As topic says pc reboots automatically during games or when left idle...gpuz log shows only 46 temp. Psu is good enough too as per other forums and calculators...I tried old - new drivers but all thats given me is instant reboot when far cry 4 loads :/ [actual game i.e when graphics starts.] before it used to reboot in the middle of the game...during IDLE reboot is solved i guess so far no reboots
what is the problem? please help me 🙁

I agree with RonInTexas, check the windows application and system log files at the time of reboot.

Your Corsair VS450 is a tier 3 power supply. Also your card calls for a minimum system power supply of 450 watts.

sapphire hd7770 vapor x - 174 watt load
Core 2 Duo 8400 - 65 watt TDP

The event viewer/system just says "The previous system shutdown at 9:01:28 AM on ‎7/‎18/‎2015 was unexpected." for all errors when it shutsdown by itself...ive tried to troubleshoot everything and it comes down to drivers, software, OS or maybe my brand new graphics card is defective? 🙁
rcald2000, so does that mean power supply is enough? I tried removing the system fan and one ram but still shuts down..
One more note..while installing any drivers [other than original CD drivers] i get application package error during install but drivers do get installed.
Update: Got the card 3 days back and 3 days back i could play far cry 4 for hours , shutdown was random..now its as soon as the game loads to the far cry world it shuts down in seconds [ as i saw both gpu and cpu fans were ON and running, just the screen went off with no signal and rebooted while fans were on..Also, tried to play Assassins creed 4 and it ran for some time 25+ fps then i changed settings to all max quality and vsync ON which made the fps stuck to 20, in seconds system shutdown :| cpu and gpu are both not overclocked and temps are 40-60, old graphics card it used to go above 62 and still no shutdowns...
One more thing i forgot to say is that when it shutsdown during gameplay sometimes its as i said above and sometimes it shutsdown, gives a long consant telephone like beep and restarts or i have to restart..tried all the ram switching..
Anyway to get the correct errors in windows log ????

Errors that state "The previous system shutdown at 9:01:28 AM on ‎7/‎18/‎2015 was unexpected." or similar are usually an indicator that one of two things happened:
1) The PSU failed or power was removed from the system (i.e. power failure in the house).
2) There was a failure in which the hardware locked up the system - and a log entry could not be made.

From the list of devices you have in your system, I would suspect one of two items:
1) Since the GPU is new, it is at fault
2) Since the GPU is a new add, and the total system power is approaching the max power output of the PSU, the PSU is failing when high demand is put on it.

I would bet on #2. The troubleshooting is going to require either replacing the GPU or replacing the PSU and running the tests. I would recommend getting a 500W - 600W PSU, from either the tier one or tier two lists here: http://www.tomshardware.co.uk/forum/id-2547993/psu-tier-list.html

A good PSU is the foundation of the system, it provides reliable power and keeps bad things from happening to your components.

Its getting worse, I already tried DDU before...Some hours back did a clean install of windows 7 and downloaded and installed the latest amd drivers for windows 7, it installed properly but now even after opening Assassin's Creed 4 just before the world is loaded system shutsdown :'( Idle shutdowns have stopped. So its confirmed its not the drivers @rcald2000, as for the BIOS it shows bios version "FB" and on the download page there are three versions F3 F2 and F1, i dunno anything about updating BIOS...please enlighten me on how and which to update...
@ronintexas, for the past 3 days i have played farcry4 and ac4 and witcher 2 and the shutdowns were none to random...if it was the high demand on PSU why didnt it shutdown at startup of game world that time ??? The video settings ingame are all same..And my corsair vs450 sadly is only 2 months old...I really dont know how ill manage to replace it and get a new one if thats possible...because i ordered it online..I did do alot of checks on this psu and there is no forum which says that it will not handle my system with ease...Same for the GPU ordered it online and i dont know if they are gonna take it back or gimme a replacement etc. But even I agree with your point 2. because thats the only problem i could think of now...or the gpu defective.....what about ram ? thats the only old component i got..
One more thing is that 1 day before i got the new GPU It did shutdown by itself a couple of times...never happened before that...and that was the day I installed the latest drivers.
If you guys could explain why I get the constant telephone beeps just after the random shutdown "sometimes" ???? could it tell the real culprit??? And thanks for the help so far guys ur my only hope 🙁

EDIT : @rcald2000 sorrry just checked ur link and it shows 2 versions of bios FB and FA and FA is first release so i guess i already have the latest BIOS version...

It really depends on the PSU, and how well it handles the load. Tier III PSUs do not handle loads as well as a Tier I or Tier II. The two enemies of most PSUs are heat and total load (total load would be the amount of watts it is delivering to the computer vs. what it is rated at - if you are pulling 440W and it is rated 450W, you are running at 98% load). The higher the load and/or the more heat, the less reliable PSUs. I usually try to get 75-85% load max - because when the computer is working hard, the heat and demand on the PSU can cause it to go higher....

Damn I cant afford a tier I or II psu and also my 2 months old corsair vs450 cant be replaced or returned according to amazon...is there any other solution?? are you sure its the PSU ??? What about graphics card being defective?? I can still return/replace the card..anyway to troubleshoot it correctly?? I tried reducing max cpu processing in power options, tried overclocking gpu to lower clocks ,fan control to 20% only, removed one 4 gb ram and dvd drive etc to reduce power load..but still either the same problem i.e shutdown just before game world load , or it runs until a graphics intensive situation occurs ingame...like after 5-10 mins and its not a overheating problem...once again it doesnt shut down just reboots with all fans on :/
Sorry im being a fuss about this because I cant believe its the PSU because every forum/calculator etc says it will run my rig with ease..

To troubleshoot i tried putting my old gpu xfx radeon hd 5450[no fans] ,put back all the components and overclocked my cpu abit ,overclocked the gpu too and tried playing on max quality and resolutions[ac4], FPS sucked as usual but tried playing in high config for some time to see if the PSU fails but no use it doesnt shutdown for my old card whatsoever....

So, i just need a confirmation that whats the fault here PSU or GPU so that I dont have the problem again later if i replace any...if its GPU i can ask for a replacement but PSU then please find me a good PSU for no problems in the future...from www.amazon.in my budget 4-6k and until i buy one is there any temporary solution to this ? to play on my new GPU without crashes?? Maybe play on very low config or something??? Id be glad if there is...thanks

Do you have a power supply that you can borrow from a friend? Removing a RAM module or a system fan, wouldn't make much difference in power usage. Perhaps lowering the overclock with MSI afterburner or EVGA precision would make enough of a difference. I'm only guessing on that point. The PSU requirements table recommends 430 watt power supply but perhaps your factory overclock pushes that boundary. The mfg says 450 watts is the minimum requirement. Are you sure there is nothing in the system log right before the unexpected reboot, that would point a finger to a problem. You said that heat is not the issue, but I'm not entirely sure that's true. Something else on the motherboard, such as the Northgate, could be getting baked enough to reboot. Simple way to eliminate heat as the source, is to open the case, turn it on it's side and even point a fan toward the motherboard. Then try to reproduce the problem by playing.

Nope, Im the only one who upgraded the PSU here..none have a better psu..
Old GPU and cpu after overclocking to test i got temps of 60-65 for both on load, gpu doesnt have a fan...and old gpu runs the system and games without any shutdowns so i dont think its because other stuff is overheating...as it would overheat during my old gpu test too right?? I did do checkups on the motherboard if anything overheating though...New gpu system shutsdown by the time the temp reaches 48 only...according to gpuz logs
About the factory overclock, i dont think its overclocked core clock is 1000mhz and memory clock is 1250 [as shown in catalyst control center ] same as normal single fan hd 7770 ghz and not as per the this --> http://www.techpowerup.com/gpudb/b102/sapphire-hd-7770-vapor-x-oc.html [my card] link through gpuz.... or maybe im wrong with the stock overclock criteria...
I tried lowering the clocks to 900 along with the ( - ) power control in catalyst control center. But still reboots either in 5 mins or at startup....by the way even on the box of the card it says minimum 450w psu.. and i hardly got anything power hungry..... 1 cd dvd drive,1 sata hdd 7200rpm,1 system regular fan, cpu and stock regular fan which sucks, usb mouse and usb keyboard and this gpu..extreme calculator shows recommended 281w and most say buy a psu with 100w more so 381...isnt that enough..by removing some stuff and also lowering clocks its still shutting down why?? why did my games run properly for a longer time when i had just got the card? its so much worse now....
And can u guys explain whats the constant beeping error that i explained above before???
Ill try msi afterburner now and let you know if lowering clocks there helps...thanks so far bros

Some of the system event log errors:
1.The following boot-start or system-start driver(s) failed to load:
cdrom
source: service control manager
more than 1 time
2.The previous system shutdown at 9:25:56 AM on ‎7/‎19/‎2015 was unexpected.
Source: event log
Lots of time...just after the critical error stated below..
3.A timeout (30000 milliseconds) was reached while waiting for a transaction response from the AMD External Events Utility service.
source:service control manager
1 time

Critical : The system has rebooted without cleanly shutting down first. This error could be caused if the system stopped responding, crashed, or lost power unexpectedly.
source:kernel power
Lots of time...i just realised that i got this error lots of times whole night while PC was on and idle.....while i checked in the morning it was on but no logon screen bcoz of windows 7 so i didnt know it rebooted...so if the kernel power error is correct then maybe my system still reboots by itself if left IDLE -_-

Because of the AMD issues - try this before you replace anything. Go to Gigabyte's website and download the newest drivers for your mobo (all of them) and install them. Then try to install the GPU drivers. If you are still having a problem, unfortunately the only test without buying something new is to remove the GPU and use the mobo video (this will eliminate the GPU - but it also puts a much smaller load on the PSU, so you have two variables at once....)

You can try to RMA the GPU....I don't have the exact chances on whether it is the PSU or GPU - but I would put it more than 50% on the PSU.

Ronintexas, I said above I have my old gpu hd 5450 and it runs without any reboots...i used msi afterburner and made my clocks to 820 core and 853 memory fan kept it locked at 25% and -4 power control and the system didnt shutdown this time... Played alot with Temps 50-59 for new gpu... So now what u suggest the problem is??? if this helps... Cpu wasn't overclocked and all the parts were connected..and ac4 fps was 20-50
One more thing please tell me what the constant beep error is!! I get it most of the time when my pc shuts down.... Sometime back while playing ac4 with these lowered clocks...electricity cut off and ups gave backup but even with lowered clocks just bcoz of no current it shutdown by itself and gave the constant beep... Happens everytime even while not playing... Ups battery is new too.. I'll try installing the mobo drivers even though I checked and did many times... There aren't much... And about the psu please find me one from Amazon.in which will be sufficient for future... Thanks

Its like a long constant beep with no pauses...almost like a telephone ring in a high tone..
somewhat like this --> https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tTnKm3YSBbc [ not my vid] , i used to get this before randomly on boot ...switching replacing ram gpu and other components used to fix it...just by fiddling inside the case..
But now i dont get the beeps on boot its more like after the random shutdowns/reboot 50% of the time it shutsdown, gives the beep, reboots. And this situation is 90% of the time when there is a power cut...UPS isnt able to give backup even though it has a new battery...sad to say i didnt experience random shutdowns nor constant beeps after power cut with my old GPU..or maybe just a coincidence that some other part /mobo causing it just when i got my new gpu
and thanks alot for coming to help

I'm ready to buy a new PSU but im still scared that it might not be the fault here...i dont want a problem even after buying a good PSU...
I still doubt because because of the kernel power error, i read about it and it has many other reasons..
And last night before sleeping i kept windows for update and downclocked my GPU much lower to 700 core 700 memory so that it doesnt reboot randomly but now when i woke up i checked the event log and it showed kernel power errors [random reboots ] throughout the night -_-

I can't guarantee that the power supply is the cause, but it would be my guess. Your scenario is precisely the reason that I over-purchase on power supplies. I don't want to wonder anytime in the future, if a under-powered supply is the cause of a problem in my computer.

Hello,

While not the best or decently priced PSU on the market, Corsair VS450 should be OK, especially when new. Moreover, your system will not draw more than 300W at full load, so 450W is plenty enough. Check the PSU voltages in BIOS / Windows (idle/load: use HWMonitor or HWInfo), especially the +12V rail.

About the 7770: they are EOL for about a year and replaced by R7-260, are you sure your card is new and not a refurbished one? Where did you purchased it? Given the fact that, by lowering the GPU frequency, the reboots are not a common occurrence anymore, I suspect your model has Elpida DDR5 memory chips (install GPU-Z, find the graphics chip model and memory); if that's the case, you may need to contact Sapphire for a proper VGA BIOS.

As suggested above, upgrade your motherboard's BIOS to the latest version available (follow to the letter the instructions from the motherboard's manual and use the old GPU, to be sure the system will not restart during the update).

You said something about an UPS; what model is it? It must have a power rating in excess of 600VA/350W. It must be a quality UPS also, because the VS450 has a hold-up time lower than the minimum recommended ATX specification (14ms vs the minimum 16ms).
