PC shuts down after a few seconds

Hello,

My custom built PC:

Intel DH67BL
Core i7 2600
Asus 5670 GPU
500W PSU
2 x 500G WD Blue HDD
2 x 4G Transcend RAM

...was working fine for a few weeks but now I'm having this strange issue:

1) If its left untouched for a few hours, then I turn it ON, it boots up abd shows the Intel logo, it even goes into BIOS if I want and sometimes even tries to load the OS... but after a few seconds or sometimes minutes it turns OFF automatically.
2) Once I have let it boot for a few times or even once, it won't show anything on the screen, no intel logo, nothing at all!
3) If I wait another few hours and they try again, I get the display on screen again!

This is what I tried so far:

1) Tried each RAM stick one by one.
2) Tried another PSU
3) Refitted the CPU Fan
4) Managed to get into BIOS and checked temperates, nothing was worrying, all under 50 degrees. I could check only for a minute or two before it shut down automatically.

Some people I talked to said I need to reapply thermal paste, but this PC was built just 2 months back and unused since, how could the thermal paste dry up so soon? Probably because of NOT using it continuously for a few weeks?

I'd really appreciate any help!

What brand PSU? And what brand and size was the replacement?

The next step should be to replace the motherboard, but first set it up outside of the case with minimum components. It could possibly be shorting out to the case.

"refitted the cpu fan"........... you mean you remover the heat sink and fan, re-applied thermal paste and reseated it ? sounds like the processor is getting hot regardless of what the BIOS says.

No, just removed the fan and refitted it as someone suggested. Thermal paste looked dried up, should I reapply? I really don't think CPU overheats, cause even If I start after say 5 hours, it only boots for a few seconds and turns OFF, its highly unlikely that CPU heats to 100 degres during these few seconds, no?

A good 300W PSU would be enough to power up and boot that system.

you may have ruined your processor. Yes, wipe off the old and reapply new. re-seat the heat snik in a proper manner and test. if it still does it it's my guess the processor is shot.

Just unscrewed the motherboard out of the case and placed it on a cloth, still the same -- boots up for a few seconds and turns off.

Nope, just boots up for like 5 seconds, doesn't even get to the starting windows screen.

Erm...I'll try reapplying thermal paste (sunday here, so can't get it tonight), but any other ideas? I really don't think its due to overheating.

you pulled the heat sink and saw the paste was dry but you re-installed it without wiping off and re-applying new. No way the heat sink will sit flush with the top of the processor with dried chunks of paste keeping it away and not allowing full contact. The BIOS won't show excessive heat because the processor fails before it heats up because it already over heated killing it...... that's my opinion. Good luck with it.

Ok sure, I'll apply thermal paste but what I don't understand is how can thermal paste dry up in just a few weeks causing the processor to overheat? I removed the fan to check that and indeed it had dried up. Is that normal?

If a system boots up then shuts off fairly quickly, it's usually a heat problem with your cpu. It's happened to me twice before and it's because of too much thermal paste.

Well...

Reapplied thermal paste but no luck, so I went to the Intel service center and was shocked to see atleast 3 other people having the same problem!

Sent it for replacement, should take 7+ days 🙁

I haven't read this entire thread, but have you tried the screws? When I installed my motherboard, I was having problems with the system turning off. The cause turned out to be nothing more than mounting screws that anchor the motherboard to the case, and only in certain holes. Have tried removing all of the mounting screws? If that consistently allows your computer to turn on and stay on, then that's the culprit. Turn the system off, put just one screw in, turn it back on and see what happens. If nothing happens, put another screw in. If the system turns off unexpectedly or doesn't turn on, put the screw in another hole. There's usually 6 screw holes on a motherboard so there's plenty of possible anchor points - use as many as you can.

Yep, I tried removing the motherboard from the case entirely as suggested by someone previously, the problem persisted. Like I said, its a faulty motherboard, sent it for repair.

Hey!

I have the exact same problem...suspect the motherboard as well. Can you post what the problem was exactly when you the mb back and if the system is working fine post mb repair.

I think the Smps is the problem or cpu(processor) fan is not fit properly if cause pc to reboot automatically after some time.
