Question PC shuts off after 5 seconds, but stays on if RAM sticks are removed ?

Hi everyone,

I’m having an issue with my custom-built PC that I can’t seem to resolve. Everything was working fine for 2.5 years (built August 2022) until recently. Now my PC shuts itself off about 5 seconds after powering on. Here’s what I’ve discovered so far:

  • If I remove the RAM sticks from my motherboard, the PC stays on
  • With the RAM sticks installed (in any configuration), the PC shuts off after a few seconds.
  • The RAM sticks worked perfectly fine in this setup before, so they should be compatible.
  • All cables and connections have been checked and securely reattached.
  • I’ve tried all RAM slots individually, and none of them work. I’ve also tested each RAM stick one by one in different slots, but the issue persists.
Specs:
  • Motherboard: Gigabyte X570S AORUS PRO AX
  • RAM: Corsair Vengeance RGB PRO 16GB (2 x 8 GB) DDR4 3600
  • CPU: AMD Ryzen 9 5900X 3.7 GHz 12-Core Processor
  • GPU: Gigabyte GeForce RTX 3080 10GB
  • PSU: Corsair RM850x White 850W
What I’m unsure about:
  • Whether the RAM slots on the motherboard are faulty.
  • If the PSU isn’t delivering enough power.
  • If there’s another hardware issue I might be overlooking
The weird thing is that after the PC shuts itself off, the RGB lighting on the RAM sticks stays on, but all other RGB (fans, GPU, etc.) turns off.

Question:
Why does my PC stay powered on without the RAM sticks, but shuts off with them installed? Both the RAM sticks and the motherboard slots appear undamaged, and this issue happened suddenly from one day to the next.

Does anyone have any advice or insight? Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks in advance!

Welcome to the forums, newcomer!

If the PSU isn’t delivering enough power.
You might want to source(borrow, not buy) a reliably built PSU and see if the issue persists though from this line;

makes me think maybe your BIOS is corrupt.

Motherboard: Gigabyte X570S AORUS PRO AX
Please take not of the PCB revision number for your motherboard;

then use the Q-Flash Plus button on the back of your motherboard in conjunction with this guide;

Different motherboard but the principle is the same.

If the BIOS was corrupt, then the above steps should revive your platform. Please make sure the rams are populating slots A2 and B2.

if the integrated memory controller on your processor has conked out, perhaps that's what's preventing the POST. Also, test the rams on another known working motherboard to rule out your ram kit being the root cause of the issue.

I'd suspect some device causing this.
Disconnect
all USB devices,
all storage devices (sata, nvme, optical drives),
all rgb and all fans, leave only cpu fan connected (rgb disconnected),
all front panel connections (USB, Audio), leave only power_on switch connected.
So it would be only motherboard, cpu, cpu fan, single ram module, graphics card and psu.
Connect pc_beeper for diagnostic beeps, if you have one.

Try to start your system. See, if you get no_keyboard error.
Then connect keyboard, reboot and try to get into BIOS.
