PC starts but nothing shows up on the screen?

Hi everybody.

Yesterday I pulled the power cable out of the back of the PC. The power cable (I think) was faulty as the slightest movement to the cable would cause the PC to turn off. I put in the new cable and turned the computer on.

It then told me the hard-drive was recovering, normal for sudden power loss, and it went to the desktop. I noticed that the WiFi was no working (as if the drivers had been uninstalled). So I restarted the PC.

However it was at this point that the problem started. When it began to restart the fans were going mad in short bursts and nothing was coming up on the screen. I thought I may have blown a component? But what?

I tested a spare graphics card had lying around and I still had the same problem, so it wasn't the GPU.

All the fans still spin (including the fan on the gpu) which suggests to me the motherboard hasn't blown.

And if the CPU had blown surely the PC would have still loaded up BIOS?

Anyway guys I'm stumped so I'm hoping you guys can help before I go out and by a new motherboard etc to try and locate the problem.

Thanks a lot,

Jack

I don't have a motherboard speaker. I have tried everything else apart from taking out the CMOS battery and check the voltage of the PSU wires. I'm worried about taking out he battery as apparently it can cause the PC to switch its output from the graphics card to the outputs on the motherboard.

PSUs degrade in performance over time. Since your problem you have already identified (loose power cord connection) is also related to your PSU, I would suggest that you replace your PSU with one that is appropriate for your system.

Depends on the motherboard, the beep codes are different on some, however 5 beep does indicate a CPU error on many. What is your make and model of motherboard? It's usually printed somewhere near the center of the board on most major brands.

I have done lots of work on this now.

I have came to the conclusion that it is not the CPU, it is not the GPU, it is not the Power Supply and it is not the RAM. Occasionally the PC turns on. But if i turn it off the chances of turning it on again is roughly 10%. But if i try enough times it comes on.

When i try and turn it on it sounds like its going in a continues loop (the fans start and stop) as if it cannot locate the BIOS software. But occasionally it does start?

I have no idea.

Could it be Windows 10? But still it would load up BIOS
